✨ We recently had the pleasure of meeting Tabby Hanlon-Scott, the Sector Engagement Lead at Enginuity ✨ Tabby is a passionate advocate for the power of engineering in the UK 📣 , and Enginuity is dedicated to unlocking the potential of UK engineers to change the world 🌍 However, a significant challenge stands in the way of engineers fulfilling their true potential: the skills gap, worsened by rapid tech advancements and shifting industry demands. We’re excited to have been part of the recent discussions surrounding the NHS England Women’s Health Strategy. As a data consultancy with female data scientists, this initiative deeply resonates with Hypatia Analytics. The strategy's commitment to addressing the gender health gap through improved data and research is a significant step forward 💪 The focus on enhancing data collection methods and ensuring women are properly represented in research and clinical trials is crucial for achieving healthcare equity. This isn't just about gathering more data - it's about collecting the right data and asking the right questions 💭 For too long, data related to #WomensHealth has been incomplete, leading to gaps in understanding and treatment. By prioritising high-quality, relevant information, this strategy takes a necessary step toward truly addressing women’s health needs. We see an opportunity to directly contribute to this effort 🤩 Data consultancies can play a pivotal role in helping healthcare providers and policymakers analyse and interpret the data collected, ensuring actionable and impactful insights. We can assist in designing studies, processing data, and creating models that provide a clearer picture of women’s health issues. About six weeks ago, we received an enthusiastic email 📩 from a Year 12 student eager for work experience. Unfortunately, our setup at Hypatia Analytics couldn't accommodate a traditional work experience placement 😞 We reached out to several corporate partners on her behalf, but had no luck. Her school also faced challenges finding a suitable placement. Not one to give up, we had a conversation to explore how we could help. The student expressed her passion for #mathematics and her ambition to pursue it at #university. She also shared her love for sports and the #OlympicGames 🥇 Inspired by her interests, we crafted a 10-week summer project centred around #data. We started with something simple: for the first two weeks, she searched for a relatable dataset. Although the internet is full of resources, it can be overwhelming to navigate. Eventually, she chose a medal table dataset from the modern Olympic Games and began her analysis 📈 We started with Excel for its accessibility, then moved on to data cleaning and analysis in #Python 🐍 She was thrilled by Python, noting how beneficial these practical skills would be if taught in schools. Now, she's spending the next two weeks continuing her dataset analysis, deciding between #PowerBI and #Tableau for her data visualisations – a choice many data enthusiasts ponder. This experience raises a broader question for our industry: when should students start learning these crucial skills, especially since most student licences are tied to higher education? And how can companies like ours contribute more effectively to our communities and bridge this gap? Reflecting on this journey, it's evident there's much we can do to support and nurture young talent. 🚀 The power of teamwork! 🚀 In data volunteering, collaboration is key 🔑 Our team recently saw this in action while analysing data for Age UK Wandsworth to help cancer patients. We hit a roadblock, struggling to find the right data and resources. Then, a miracle happened! ✨ Rony Arafin from the British Heart Foundation noticed our social media post and offered his help. He connected us with Emily Agius from Oldmeldrum Breast Cancer Now, a true expert in the field. Emily shared invaluable data and insights from her work supporting breast cancer patients. Her help transformed our project, showing us new ways to analyse and use data effectively. This experience highlighted the incredible power of networking and sharing knowledge in data science. Huge thanks to Rony and Emily for their generosity and expertise! 🙌 Their support has propelled our project forward and reinforced our belief in collaboration. Rita’s work with Maths Explorers is truly inspiring. Her focus is on sparking mathematical curiosity and nurturing creative problem-solving skills through innovative outreach and enrichment programs. By partnering with schools, libraries, community groups, families, and third-sector organisations, she makes maths education accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. Her unique approach to #WellbeingMaths emphasises that mathematics is for everyone. Rita is committed to developing educational methods that create inclusive, supportive environments for individuals of all abilities and backgrounds. Her programs are thoughtfully designed to promote mental, emotional, and social wellbeing, including for those living with dementia. Through joyful and engaging maths experiences, Rita fosters community cohesion, addresses social inequalities, and enhances mental health and emotional wellbeing for children, isolated older adults, and people living with dementia. Additionally, she actively contributes to the Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) and the Roots2Grow initiative. A few months ago, we launched a volunteer data team for a pro Bono project, bringing together a diverse group of experts who could choose their areas of interest and level of involvement. 🎉 And we're thrilled to announce that volunteers Cláudia Tavares and Sandra Abubakir have completed the first draft of the Participatory Needs Analysis for Age UK Wandsworth! 🎉 This analysis aims to understand the needs of Wandsworth's elderly community, providing valuable insights to help shape Age UK Wandsworth’s services. The data gathered supports the Age Well Service, a key part of Wandsworth Borough Council’s strategy for transforming adult social care by promoting independence and cost-effective preventative resources. Age UK Wandsworth is committed to co-producing the Age Well Service with local older adults. These insights are crucial for mapping existing services and shaping future provisions. However, our journey doesn’t stop here. This draft is a significant milestone, but we’ll continue refining our analysis, seeking additional data, and incorporating feedback to deliver a robust, actionable report. To all our volunteers, your dedication is what makes this project possible! Every effort and hour spent brings us closer to supporting Age UK Wandsworth and making a meaningful impact in our community. We were thrilled to participate in the 180th European Study Group with Industry (ESGI), a five-day workshop bringing together mathematical scientists and industry partners to tackle real-world challenges. Since its inception in 1968, ESGI has been a hub for addressing pressing issues through collaborative efforts. This year’s event, hosted by University of Birmingham, featured six diverse problem statements. A highlight was Mondelēz International’ project, where they developed mathematical models to study how chocolate changes during consumption. The goal was to design healthier and more sustainable products. Witt Energy work to optimise buoy design for wave energy converters was also brilliant. This project aimed to enhance the efficiency of converting wave motion into electrical power, blending physics, engineering, and mathematics to advance renewable energy. Another project, from ukactive, focused on the impact of tax reforms on promoting physical activity. This analysis highlighted the economic and health benefits of an active lifestyle, demonstrating the power of data in shaping public policy. At Hypatia Analytics, we contributed to the ‘Data-Driven Strategies for Project Pricing and Resource Allocation in Software Development’ project. We used statistical and machine learning techniques to improve resource allocation and project pricing, gaining valuable insights for our work. ESGI was a powerful reminder of the impact of interdisciplinary collaboration. We are excited about future partnerships and innovations stemming from this experience.
