With the built environment contributing to nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, investors are increasingly utilising ESG principles to understand and optimise the sustainability credentials of their real estate portfolios. However, does sustainability have to come at a the expense of delivering competitive returns? Not necessarily, argues Sadaf Askari. In her latest piece for Institutional Real Estate Europe, Sadaf looks at the regulatory constraints investors need to navigate, and whether current frameworks go far enough when it comes to issues like retrofitting. 💬 Networking 🏃➡️ Trail running 🍕 Well-earned refreshments Hats off to Danny Hope and Hannah Cawthra for organising an excellent networking event for north-west property and construction professionals this week. They even managed to arrange blue skies - no mean feat when you're within touching distance of Greater Manchester! Reach out to Danny if you're interested in attending a future event. #networking #northwestproperty #northwestconstruction
Wow! The north west property and construction community has spoken, they want more of this type of networking! I’ve considered putting on an event like this for years and never got round to it, I figured not many would be interested. But, 30 brave souls trekked out to Rivington to join me and my Hydrock, now Stantec colleagues on my home turf for a trail run in lovely countryside followed by pizza and beer at the Rivington Brewery. We were so lucky with the weather after Monday’s monsoon and we were rewarded for our efforts with a beautiful sunset. This tops the bike rides and triathlon masterclasses I've organised in the past just demonstrating the simplicity and joy of running in the countryside with friends. Thank you to everyone who came, I hope you all enjoyed it and went away with some new business contacts and friends. And, if you’ve not run off-road much before you’ll never go back to the roads now! Huge thanks to Hannah Cawthra for helping me to organise the event. #property #construction #trailrunning #networking

🚨One week to go! 🚨 Catch Mark Walker alongside James Brenner of Archus at Healthcare Estates 2024 - 8th and 9th October - Manchester Central, where they'll be discussing how to prepare for PFI handback. With the National Audit Office advising a seven-year timeframe to prepare for the handback of PFI assets, and nearly 20% of NHS Trusts in England having a PFI contract due to expire in 2031 or sooner, it's an issue that's becoming increasingly important. Newcastle University's The Catalyst has been designed to bring together business, academia and the public to collaborate and support research and development initiatives. Balancing a striking exterior, the internal layout focuses on highly flexible and easy to configure spaces, including ‘huddle rooms’, a theatre designed to provide an intimate cinematic experience with seating for 175 people, a boardroom and a workshop, which acts as a large event and product demonstration space. Our smart energy and sustainability team was appointed at an early stage to help the project design team focus on achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. With the building complete and a district heating network on site, the goal stretched to achieving an ‘Outstanding’ rating, which was successfully confirmed in February 2020. Steep topography. Poor soil quality. This brownfield site in South Wales wasn't suitable for either building or crops, but it still held enormous potential - the perfect spot to generate renewable energy. Our experts helped secure planning approval for a 6MW solar farm, which is expected to deliver a reduction of over 7,000 tonnes of carbon during its 40-year lifespan. It will connect 5MW of power directly to the National Grid and 1MW via private wire to the nearby Royal Glamorgan Hospital. We handled the full PV design, including mounting, electrical infrastructure, panels, site access, foundation design and layout. We also modelled the costs and the long-term financial benefits to the local authority Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, in keeping with their climate change strategy. This is a significant achievement for them on their journey to being carbon-neutral by 2030. It's also another critical step towards achieving the Welsh Government's ambition for a net zero public sector. Where should the Labour government be focusing its efforts in order to boost construction in the north-west? 🏗️ That was the question posed to participants at Building Magazine's recent regional roundtable for its Building the Future Think Tank, featuring our own Danny Hope. Availability of retrofit funding, the positive impact of devolution, and tackling the north-south divide were all on the agenda. If you're a Building subscriber, you can check out the full piece in the September 2024 issue using this link: 👇 https://lnkd.in/e6VrmDVa

Healthcare on the high street. The equivalent of an Apple Store? Great debate at our London Real Estate Forum roundtable today on how the NHS estate and retail environments can be positive for each other. Get it right and there’s potential for a positive commercial domino effect on every other tenant in the vicinity. Make it a destination, somewhere beyond where we just treat patients, was one of the key takeaways. Thank you to all our guests for a thought-provoking debate! #LREF2024 #RealEstate #Property #Healthcare

From inflation to cost increases, a changing labour market and recovery from recent events, the NHS in Wales, like the rest of the UK, is grappling with a range of complex challenges. But how do NHS Trusts in Wales balance these competing demands with future-proofing an ageing estate, all while delivering high-quality care? That's the question our Regional Director for Wales Matthew Ace poses in his latest blog for Insider Media. Find out what he thinks is needed to create a healthcare environment that is not only fit for today, but also resilient for the future, here: https://lnkd.in/e76QVrtP #Healthcare #NHS #Wales #Estatemanagement #Decarbonisation
