One Medicine for humans and animals

About us

Humanimal Trust drives collaboration between vets, doctors and researchers so that all humans and animals benefit from sustainable, medical progress but not at the expense of an animal’s life. This is One Medicine. Healthcare can and should advance hand in hand. A two-way street between human and veterinary medicine is both possible and necessary for humans and animals to benefit equitably from cutting edge advances. • We increase awareness and improve understanding of One Medicine • We facilitate collaboration between human and veterinary medicine • Through education, we inspire everyone to take the One Medicine message forward • We fund, facilitate and share research • We influence legislative, policy and practice change. Advances in both human and animal medicine can be achieved more quickly, if there is closer collaboration and mutual learning. We believe and advocate that this will lead to progressively fewer laboratory animal tests until one day they become obsolete. Technological advances in the diagnosis and analysis of naturally occurring disease mean that for the first time in history the end point of the study of disease does not need to involve the death of an animal. We believe we all share responsibility for creating a fairer society, with better opportunities to benefit equitably from medical progress for humans and animals. If we miss this opportunity we will all pay the price in wasted time, wasted money and the wasted lives of both humans and animals.

Today is #OneHealthDay and although the concepts of One Health and One Medicine differ, they both recognise the importance of the relationship between humans and animals 👣🐾 We want a world where both humans AND animals have better opportunities to benefit equitably from medical progress because vets, doctors and researchers routinely collaborate and share. This is One Medicine. We believe this will lead to progressively fewer laboratory animal tests until one day, they become obsolete. Pain isn’t just a symptom, it’s a survival mechanism shared across species. In an article written for Animal Therapy Magazine last month, our Schools Education Manager, Rachel Jackson, delves into the intricate process of pain and how humans and animals alike rely on it for diagnosis, treatment, and survival. ‘Understanding Pain’ is also the subject of one of our lessons for post-16 year olds, designed to help them learn about the transformative potential of One Medicine 📗⚖️ Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ePsKFVAA #OneMedicine #PainManagement #Education #AllPatientsMatter

It’s been a week since our 10th Anniversary Symposium, ‘One Medicine: Time to Innovate, Time to Act’ and we are still on a high! The energy and passion displayed by the human and animal health and research professionals who joined us was truly inspiring. It is clear that we are all committed to making a difference for ALL species. As our CEO, Joe Bailey, put it, “It feels like we truly are on the cusp of making One Medicine a reality.” 🙌 We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported us, as well as our dedicated staff and volunteers who helped make the day such a success. And of course, we cannot forget our amazing speakers who generously shared their time and knowledge with us. Special mention to Christopher Lloyd and his team at What on Earth! for showcasing the wonderful new children’s book, 'We Are All Animals' 🙏 For those who couldn’t attend, fear not! Joe will be sharing her reflections on the day in our October newsletter, One Medicine Matters. If you haven’t signed up yet, visit our website https://lnkd.in/etFhrwsx to stay updated on all things One Medicine. Let’s keep the momentum going and work towards a future where all humans and animals benefit from equal and sustainable medical progress, but not at the expense of an animal’s life ⚖️ #OneMedicine4All #Time2Act #Time2Innovate

This week is Bone and Joint Week, which is aimed at promoting discussions about the prevention, management and treatment of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders such as arthritis, back pain, trauma, paediatric conditions, and osteoporosis. This year’s theme focusses on the need for more integrated MSK care - greater collaboration within health and social care to prevent and manage MSK conditions more effectively. But what about greater collaboration between human and animal health professionals, so that not only do humans benefit from improved care, but animals too? 🚶♂️🐕🦺 A One Medicine approach would enable this to happen for the benefit of ALL species 🙏 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/ecvACUez #ICare #AllPatientsMatter #OneMedicine #JoinedUpForJoints

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay and this year’s theme is workplace mental health. With the rise of remote working, our “workplace” may now include our companion animals. This gives us the wonderful opportunity to spend more time with our companions during working hours, which is hugely beneficial to our state of mind. But let's not forget that we must also consider theirs. Regular walks, playtime or cuddles, can ensure remote working is beneficial to us all! 🐕🦺 Reciprocity lies at the heart of One Medicine. Let's work towards a world where good mental health is a priority for both humans and animals alike ⚖️ #OneMedicine #MentalHealth #RemoteWorking

Had a wonderful time in London today at the Wellcome Trust supporting Humanimal Trust’s 10th anniversary symposium. Some truly incredible and memorable talks putting into perspective how alike humans and animals are and their one medicine approach. We were also honored to meet the ‘we are all animals’ book author, off the back of BCH Ltd’s book donation to Birmingham Children’s hospital a few weeks ago. On a personal note if anyone in London saw a frazzled looking blonde in a grey suit trying to navigate the tube - I made it home safely.

Today is #WorldAnimalDay, an annual event on 4th October, celebrating animal rights and welfare across the globe 🌎 At Humanimal Trust, we advocate studying naturally occurring disease in humans and animals, rather than artificially induced disease in a healthy animal. By learning from these studies, together with other medical research and clinical practice, both humans AND animals can benefit more quickly and equitably ⚖️ We won't rest until animal testing becomes obsolete in BOTH human AND animal medicine.
