The ocean is showing notable signs of progressing towards the La Niña threshold in recent weeks. Stronger trade winds have led to the upwelling of cooler sub-surface waters. This year, there is an abundance of cooler-than-average water below the surface, poised to rise with varying wind stresses. While traditional measures anticipate a weak to moderate La Niña this year, the Relative Oceanic Nino Index (RONI) presents an alternative perspective. RONI, comparing sea surface temperature anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific with the global tropics, offers a more insightful view of ENSO-related rainfall and thunderstorm patterns, especially in a changing climate. Recent RONI values have plunged to -0.75°C, indicating La Niña conditions. With the growing frequency of La Niña events in recent years, guidance hints at the potential for a significant La Niña event in 2024-25. What implications could this have Fall and winter? La Niña can cause drier than normal conditions in the Southwest and Central Plains in the fall, and in the Southeast in the winter. For the traditional Winter months, La Niña can cause warmer and drier conditions in the South, and colder conditions in the North and Canada. The Pacific Northwest and Ohio Valley are more likely to experience wetter than normal winters.

Yesterday I popped over to the iconic Willis building to talk reinsurance at The Insurer’s pre-Monte Carlo annual get together. I was fortunate to share a stage with some really distinguished reinsurance experts and, despite being outnumbered five-to-one (as the only broker on the panel), they made me feel pretty welcome.     And while some members of our panel were more glass half empty than half full, there was actually a remarkable degree of positivity in the room. The point I made in my speech was that we must continue to do more to bring capacity to the market, cover systemic risks and help the consumer at the sharp end. We also have a duty to support areas of global transformation such as the great shift to a low carbon economy. There’s huge opportunity here and reinsurers have it in their gift to be the great enablers. There were two themes that rang out loud and clear across the auditorium. First off, the importance of innovation. Another of my fellow panellists pointed out we’ve got lots of tools in our toolbox. So let’s use them! Products like parametrics insurance are already improving thousands of lives. And secondly, collaboration. Competition is good. But collaboration is better. And when insurers, reinsurers, brokers and government get together real progress is made. We saw that collaborative spirit in action yesterday. It certainly bodes well as we pack our bags and head for sunnier climes on the French Riviera. #MonteCarlo #reinsurance #ParametricsInsurance
