We have launched a new entity in Saudi Arabia as we continue to expand our offering in the Kingdom. HFW has been in Riyadh for more than a decade and we have now established a formal subsidiary as one of a select group of international law firms to have received a license from the Saudi Ministry of Justice to practice in the Kingdom. This follows our recruitment in Riyadh of partners Abdulrahman Al-Ohaly and Euan Pinkerton, and the relocation of insurance expert Justin Whelan from Abu Dhabi and aviation specialist Francesco Fiorilli from Dubai. Our UAE Managing Partner, Yaman Al Hawamdeh, says: “Saudi Arabia is an extremely important market for HFW and our clients, and these moves reflect both our longstanding commitment to the region and our intention to significantly expand our offering as part of the firm’s ambitious global growth plans. Thanks to our license, we are able to provide clients with expert advice on local and international law, with the benefit of full Rights of Audience before the Saudi courts, and the larger office space gives us the room that we will need as we continue to add leading talent at all levels.” HFW has been in the Middle East since 2006 and we have 19 partners and 60 lawyers in total across our offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait City, and Riyadh, making ours one of the largest and longest-standing practices of any international law firm in the region. HFW was delighted to join forces with HR Maritime to host over 50 guests for a full day of discussions on Electronic Bills of Lading at the Warwick Hotel in Geneva on Thursday 16 September. HFW Partner Michael Buisset shared his experience in this field and gave an update on current discussions on adoption of electronic trade documents. It is widely admitted that we now have a momentum for the adoption of Electronic Bills of Lading industrywide. It was really interesting to share each others' experiences and to discuss our ideas and concerns with the various stakeholders in the business, including banks, carriers, commodities traders, BIMCO, the IG P&I, the ICC, PWC, IFTA and the digital platforms. We are also grateful to SECRO for sponsoring this lively day of discussions. We look forward to continuing these discussions in the weeks to come.
