Congratulations to Heartwood Inns on the successful opening of their fourth pub with rooms, The Coat & Bear in Newbury. This beautiful new pub in the heart of bustling Newbury has 26 boutique bedrooms which have been thoughtfully and beautifully designed by Inge Watrobski to create a home from home environment with Heartwood's signature touches including Roberts Radios, Bramley Toiletries and, in some of the rooms, spectacular free-standing baths. The opening day saw invited guests enjoy a sneak peek of some of the rooms, live music from the Polka Dot Girls and the newly created signature cocktail for the pub, the aptly-named Marmalade Sandwich. The pub was then officially opened by the Mayor of Newbury, Councillor Andy Moore OBE accompanied by the Lady Mayoress and his Attendant. It's been a week since we opened the doors to Heartwood Inns The White Hart in Lewes and what a week it has been! Congratulations go to Jenny who has been promoted to the role of Head Chef at our pub The Cricketers in Cobham! Jenny joined The Cricketers in May 2022 as a Junior Sous Chef bringing with him an extensive experience of working on cruise liners and in 5-star hotels. On joining he quickly learned the ropes and worked well with the rest of the team. He has impressed everyone with his helpful attitude and ability to handle pressure and is always ready to help a site in need. In 2023 Jenny was promoted to Sous Chef and demonstrated his ability to run the kitchen. Jenny then progressed to the role of Senior Sous Chef earlier this year before being promoted to Head Chef. General Manager Luke and Chef Jenny run a very well organised operation at The Cricketers and we look forward to seeing the pair develop and grow the business together. After an extensive multi-million pound refurbishment, today we opened our third pub with rooms, The White Hart in Lewes and what a spectacle the official opening was! Guests were transported back to the early days of the inn and invited to immerse themselves in the wonderful history of the building and Lewes.  The White Hart is a historic coaching inn centrally located in the market town of Lewes, East Sussex. Steeped in history, Lewes is notably known as the home of American Founding Father and political activist Thomas Paine who contributed to the creation of the American Declaration of Independence. Frequented by Thomas and his acquaintances in the Headstrong Club, The White Hart has since become known as “the cradle of American Independence”. On arrival guests were greeted by “Thomas Paine”, a Founding Father of America and regular at The White Hart in the early 18th century. Interacting with “William Verrall” one of the inn’s original publicans and other local characters, guests enjoyed a tasting from a specially-brewed cask of Tom Paine ale from family-owned Harvey’s brewery, 18th century music, calligraphy and more. Local clockmakers and restoration experts W.F. Bruce also helped to unveil the newly repaired and restored Holman Parliamentary clock that takes pride of place in the bar. The opening concluded with the pub being officially opened by the Mayor of Lewes, Imogen Makepeace, and Thomas Paine. Four days in and our new autumn menu is already going down a storm. Full of seasonal favourites and celebrating the very best of British produce, our chefs have created some truly wonderful dishes. Autumn Still Life - originally created by Raymond for Le Manoir, is one such dish. Created to embody a ramble through an autumn wood foraging for ingredients, this dessert is a real work of art.
