New evaluations of the charities Taimaka and Fortify Health. 👶 Parenting - Improving child development by enriching parenting practices. A new evaluation of the Reach Up. 🚓 Crime - Using psychotherapy and cash transfers to reduce crime in Liberia. A new evaluation of the charity Network for Empowerment & Progressive Initiative (NEPI). ⚠ Lead poisoning - Preventing lead exposure in Ghana. A new evaluation of Pure Earth’s programme. And 1 updated assessment: 🧠 Psychotherapy - An updated analysis of the impact of treating depression in low income countries. We’ve also revised our evaluations of StrongMinds (2023 ‘top charity’) and Friendship Bench (2023 ‘promising charity’). For an overview of all this new research, register for the webinar: https://lnkd.in/eMvFJerJ (We’ll be releasing the full reports over the next few weeks. We're delighted to share that our team will be among the authors contributing to the next World Happiness Report. Our chapter focuses on the question we 𝘩𝑜𝘱𝑒 readers are asking, ‘What can 𝘐 do for world happiness?’ and reviews what’s known so far about which charities globally are the most effective at turning your money into happiness for others.
CONFIRMED: We’ve assembled an international team of interdisciplinary experts to tackle the topic of ’Caring and Sharing’ in World Happiness Report 2025. Following our first-ever public call for chapter proposals, we received 39 expressions of interest from 18 different countries. Researchers will examine multiple aspects of caring and sharing, from the social connection of sharing a meal to our attitudes to others, and much more in between. The UK government (and others worldwide) need to start using their aid properly. At HLI, we use cash as a high-quality benchmark and then find things even better than it! Explore our research and find out more: https://lnkd.in/dFeursm9
How could the UK’s £15 billion a year in international aid to do more good? Rory Stewart argues they should benchmark their programs against giving cash directly to find out how well they work. "When you are short of cash, using direct cash is a very good way of getting results." In his testimony to UK Parliament, Rory argues that aid agencies don't know if their programs work better than simply giving people in poverty cash directly. When it's been studied, direct cash often outperforms conventional programs. To make aid budgets do the most good possible, comparing to direct cash should be a more universal requirement. Better still, a cash transfer can improve not just one but all aspects of multi-dimensional poverty. More than a benchmark, direct cash should be our default, as Yolande Wright argues in Devex: GiveDirectly.org/default
