Meet Susan. Living near the Appenzell Alps in Switzerland, Susan cherishes her active lifestyle, enjoying walks with her husband in the Swiss countryside. A year ago, cataracts clouded her vision impacting her quality of life. Cataracts, a leading cause of blindness, affect 65 million people globally. With an aging population, cases are expected to rise. Susan underwent cataract surgery at a local clinic. Thanks to Medicel AG, a Halma company, Susan's treatment involved an innovative lens injector that quickly replaced her cloudy lenses with artificial ones. The procedure restored her vision from 20% to 100%. Today, Susan enjoys her walks and family time without the challenges of poor vision. Medicel’s technology has not only restored her sight but also transformed her life. Halma has a number of companies who are specialists in eye care. Together they are committed to combating preventable blindness worldwide, one patient at a time. #SaferCleanerHealthier #WorldSightDay https://lnkd.in/ekFzMzf4

Malawi provides free healthcare to its 21 million citizens, but with only $14 allocated per patient annually, the challenges are immense. Women and children face significant health disparities, with high maternal mortality and neonatal death rates. The Area 25 Health Centre in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, serves around 700,000 people and exemplifies these challenges. The maternal health clinic struggled with high rates of stillbirths and neonatal deaths. Traditional methods of electronic fetal monitoring relied heavily on clinicians to interpret raw data and identify subtle warning signs, often under stressful conditions and with limited resources. To address these issues, Area 25 partnered with Malawi’s Ministry of Health, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine. They introduced PeriGen ’s AI-based solution that acts as an automated early warning system. This technology monitors critical vital signs, detecting abnormalities and alerting clinicians in real-time to act. The impact has been transformative. Area 25 has seen an 82% reduction in intrapartum stillbirth and early neonatal death rates. Linda, a healthy 3-month-old baby born at the health centre, is a testament to this success. The advancements at Area 25 demonstrate how innovative healthcare solutions can dramatically improve maternal and neonatal outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa. This #WWWeek, we want to highlight the global issue of water loss due to outdated infrastructure, with 8.5 trillion gallons of water lost annually. Nearly a third of the world's lost water occurs in the US. Meet Michael Bills, Water & Sewer Superintendent for the Village of Oak Park, a Chicago suburb known for, amongst other things, its Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. Michael oversees a 105-mile network of pipes, ensuring 1.7 billion gallons of safe water reach 54,000 residents annually. However, Oak Park was losing 20% of its water—about 530 Olympic-sized pools—through leaks each year. To address this, Oak Park aimed to reduce water loss to 10%, aligning with Illinois Department of Natural Resources regulations. The challenge was compounded by ageing infrastructure, temperature extremes, and porous soil, making leaks hard to detect. Oak Park partnered with HWM Global, a Halma company, using their Fluid Conservation Systems-FCS technology. Loggers attached to pipes detected the smallest leak sounds, allowing Michael's team to access a digital map of potential leaks and prioritise repairs efficiently. The pilot program identified 19 previously undetectable leaks, and Oak Park has now expanded the use of FCS’ acoustic loggers across the whole network which identified 10 further leaks within the first month.
