The quickest way to unlock solar deployment at scale on new homes is to remove the cost burden from housebuilders and homeowners. This is our core mission at GRYD and how we ensure every new home built by our developer partners can achieve the highest energy efficiency and carbon reduction without adding to the build cost. Mohamed Gaafar chatted to Rachel England about net-zero building industry regulations, like the Future Homes Standard, and how GRYD is minimising the cost burden on developers.

🏡 The UK’s Future Homes Standard is set to introduce stringent new carbon mandates for all new homes, driving the market for rooftop solar power. UK startup GRYD is at the forefront of this trend, aiming to reduce costs and risks for homeowners while capitalising on the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions. The company is tapping into institutional capital, traditionally reserved for utility-scale solar projects, to add residential rooftop systems to entire housing developments. Homeowners do not purchase the solar hardware. Instead, they pay for the electricity produced on their roofs at a price lower than traditional grid power. This eliminates the large one-off costs and long-term financing contracts that can put homeowners off when considering an investment in solar. Using AI, GRYD optimises energy use at the appliance level, creating a ‘virtual power plant’ where homes can share electricity independently of the public grid. #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #FutureHomes #Innovation #GreenEnergy #GRYDEnergy #AI #VirtualPowerPlant #Housing #EnergyEfficiency

Solar energy in the UK is a hive of activity! 🌞 You may have seen GRYD recently became a fully-fledged member of Solar Energy UK, the leading trade association for solar in the country. As it turns out, we’re not the only ones! There are now over 400 members and this recent growth reflects the booming solar industry and the increasing focus on renewable energy solutions in the UK. As the co-founders of GRYD, Mohamed Gaafar, Tom Jordan, and I see this as a clear indicator of the massive opportunity in the solar space. The government's commitment to net zero and recent policy changes supporting solar alongside an increase in the construction of new homes are creating a perfect storm for innovation and growth. GRYD's zero-cost solar proposition enables property developers to include intelligently optimised smart solar systems on all new-build homes while completely removing the cost of solar and battery hardware. Our innovative model makes sustainable living more accessible and affordable than ever before, while perfectly positioning us at the forefront of a rooftop energy revolution. We're excited to be part of this thriving community and to contribute to the UK's sustainable energy future. ☀️⚡️🔋🏠🌱

The UK is a great place for solar... despite what the current weather might lead you to believe ☔

View profile for Scott Whiteside, graphic

    Co-Founder & CPO @ GRYD Energy⚡️🔋🌱

Is the UK a good place for solar? ☀️ Since starting GRYD, this is the question we have been asked the most. The simple answer is, YES! The UK has a reputation for being grey and wet , but we actually receive plenty of the sun's energy over the course of a year—more than enough to provide the majority of our homes' energy needs. You may think the hotter the better when it comes to places prime for solar energy generation, but while it’s true places like the UAE, India, and the Sahara Desert have high solar potential, the high temperatures cause the operating efficiency of a solar panel to drop. Higher temperatures make the silicon cells less effective at converting sunlight into electricity, which can lead to a decrease in output capacity of about 0.5% for each degree above the optimum range. The ideal temperature range for a solar panel is between 20°C to 25°C—this is the point at which it tends to produce the most electricity. The UK's temperate climate means that our solar panels can often operate within this optimal range, ensuring consistent and efficient energy production. It's also worth noting that, while higher temperatures do reduce the efficiency of solar panels, they won’t stop working completely unless temperatures hit around 85°C, so they’re still a great source of clean energy even in the hottest places on Earth! 🔥 At GRYD, we're building a smarter, cleaner energy future for the UK. We’re embracing the power of the sun to move towards a sustainable future, where every home has solar and storage as standard! ☀️⚡️🔋🌱
