The proposed reform to flexible working requests in the new Employment Rights Bill is a subtle but fundamental change for employers. 📌Earlier this year, the right to request flexible working became a day one right for all employees. Employees can now make two requests in any twelve-month period and employers have to deal with the request within two months. 📌However, the Bill is proposing further changes, making it more onerous for employers to just rely on one of the eight statutory grounds to refuse a request. 📌Employers will only be allowed to refuse the application if it is reasonable for them to rely on one of the eight grounds. 📌The reasonableness test in relation to the ground an employer can rely on is a material and fundamental change, making it more difficult for employers to decline flexible working requests. 📌We have seen an indication that this change will be “immediate”, but there has been no further update since the Bill was released. Actions for HRDs: 📌Be prepared for the change to possibly happen a lot sooner than many of the other proposed changes in the Bill. 📌Be ready to quickly review and update policies and procedures relating to flexible working requests. 📌Engage and upskill managers who will deal with requests. 📌Keep an eye out for any developments and further guidance. Any questions - get in touch for a chat… Click the link in the comments to register for our free webinar where we will discuss Labour’s key employment changes in more detail. You can also sign up to our Employment Law Now updates and be the first to receive details of all key employment law developments. Follow me on LinkedIn and turn on notifications (click the bell at the top) because in HR, especially during times of legislative change, we firmly believe one thing can help make all the difference.

Partner/Head of Wealth Preservation at Greenwoods Legal LLP

The devil will be in the detail (I’m currently working my way through the 170 paged document 👀) but for now the key points for our Wealth Preservation clients are: * Capital Gains Tax: it’s going up but the increases are not huge….hopefully, good news for clients. Changes are effective immediately. No change to current rates on residential property (they remain at 18%/24%) 🏡 * Inheritance Tax: threshold of £325,000 for an individual estate to be frozen for a further two years to 2030- lifetime planning can help. 💵 * Farm and Business owners: a review of IHT planning and Wills prior to 6 April 2026 advised to consider impact of changes to the current reliefs which are being limited for assets valued at more £1m. 💼 *Non-domiciles: the concept of non-domicile to be abolished from 6 April 2025. Clients should seek advice on what this means for their circumstances. 🌎 *Pensions: inherited pensions and death benefits will be subject to inheritance tax from 6 April 2027. Clients should seek advice from their financial advisers. ⏳ Our team are here to help you understand how the Budget impacts you and your family- do get in touch to discuss your options.
