About us

Founded in 2007 by Jay Gort and Fiona Scott, Gort Scott is a RIBA chartered architecture and urban design practice with a focus on how buildings and places create healthy environments for better connections between people, now and for the future. We are committed to reducing our industry’s contribution to the dual crises of climate and biodiversity, working collaboratively to realise clients’ ambitions for regenerative, circular, and low carbon designs. We are attuned to working and thinking at different scales, from one-off houses to planning pieces of city, drawing out social and sustainable opportunities in each. We work on commercial, education, cultural and residential buildings as well as public realm and urban masterplans. We are recognised for our urban research, which informs the practice’s design work. Gort Scott’s founding principle of making a positive, imaginative and considered contribution to the built environment has seen them design a portfolio of projects ranging from leisure, retail, education, cultural and residential buildings to urban masterplans. Gort Scott’s work draws on a commitment to direct relationships with clients and in depth consultation to draw value from existing contexts and create innovative design solutions. Their experience of the planning process and informed use of technology and materials has led to repeat commissions from clients and their designs winning numerous competitions. Starting on-site next month: The reuse and refurbishment of Silver Street public toilets in Cambridge City Centre.   The scheme includes providing a new above ground accessible toilet block alongside refurbishing the existing below ground facilities. The proposed public toilets take the form of a small, lightweight pavilion that sits atop a concrete base on Silver Street bridge. The filigree metalwork draws inspiration from the work of the silversmiths that historically occupied the street.   Being largely located beneath the street at river level, the existing facilities suffer from poor and congested access and are currently closed due to maintenance issues.    The proposed above ground structure occupies a smaller area than the existing toilets and contains a wheelchair-accessible toilet with baby changing facilities. A cylindrical rooflight draws natural light into the space below. The existing below ground toilets are rearranged and refurbished and a new stair enclosure provided at street level. The design is driven by inclusive values and an aspiration to support the needs of all users, from the organisation of space to signage and management systems.   Visit our website to read more about the historic setting of Silver Street toilets, and the proposals. https://lnkd.in/ezCaASBZ   Gort Scott - Architect Cambridge City Council - Client  Peter Dann Consulting Engineers - Structural Engineer Max Fordham LLP - Sustainability Engineer 3GCC - Cost Consultant PA Safety and Building Consultancy Limited - CDM   #architecture #Cambridge #SilverStreetBridge #RiverCam #heritagebuildings #sustainablearchitecture #inclusivedesign

We’re very happy to be able to talk about this now (!): Studio Weave have been appointed by London Borough of Waltham Forest to lead the £4.5 million revitalisation of Vestry House Museum. We’re proud to be working on such a significant building and community asset. For Studio Weave, this project is the next step in over a decade of research and design in the cultural sector, building on our work on civic infrastructures and public spaces. Waltham Forest is investing in the arts at a time when elsewhere funding is limited and culture is struggling. This is both essential and a great thing to be involved in. The project will improve access to the borough’s culture and historic archives, while expanding the use of the building to attract a wider audience. We will be collaborating with outstanding colleagues including Tom Massey, Matilda Pye, Maria McLintock, Verity-Jane Keefe, Sebastian Cox, Andrew Lerpiniere and Paul Downie (Webb Yates Engineers), Sela-Jaymes Taylor (Gort Scott), Chris Lloyd (AZ Urban Studio), Urban Flow & Jason Wolfe and Luke Hall (Wolfe Hall). And are also looking forward to working with the talented client team across London Borough of Waltham Forest. - - - Vestry House Museum, set in Walthamstow Village, holds over 100,000 historical objects, revealing Waltham Forest’s the rich history. From Vestry House’s origins as a workhouse in 1730 to its varied uses as a builder’s merchants,  police station, armoury, and more, the building has witnessed to the evolution of LB Waltham Forest. Plans are in motion to revitalize the museum, as a more inclusive space that authentically portrays the borough's diverse history. This renewal involves enhancing the heritage experience, fostering stronger community ties, improving accessibility, introducing new workspaces, and adding a café. The transformation is scheduled to commence in early 2024, with the museum aiming to reopen its doors in 2026. - - - 📷 Team at Vestry House by Tim Crocker Sorrel Hershberg, LBWF Lorna Lee, LBWF Ana-Maria Vasilache, Studio Weave James John Cliff, Studio Weave Matilda Pye, Museum Consultant Eddie Blake, Studio Weave Verity-Jane Keefe, Visual Artist Je Ahn, Studio Weave - - -

Designing from a cat’s perspective 🐾 The London Cat Clinic is the second specialist cat clinic that we have designed for an independent practitioner with very different values from the large chain and franchise vet practices. We worked carefully alongside our client to refine a sequence of spaces that would improve and streamline their day to day working practices facilitating new kinds of interaction between the veterinary staff and their feline visitors. What better moment to highlight this project than International Cat Day. https://lnkd.in/eQ_aq7rA #internationalcatday Photos: Jim Stephenson

Following on from our recent ‘town hall’ meeting at Gort Scott, which allowed the whole practice to workshop key sustainability objectives, the Environmental Action Group have finalised their Sustainable Design Roadmap in line with guidance from UK Architects Declare. The roadmap is designed to track a realistic course to meet our targets in 2030 and give guidance on the steps we need to take to get there. The practice roadmap is intended to be used by staff of all levels and has allowed us to articulate the following objectives. 🟢 To review our current progress as a practice against best practice standards across the built environment. 🟢 To provide guidance for all staff when helping to develop / advocate for a strong sustainability brief. 🟢 To provide an indication of what best practice looks like during project design development. 🟢 To establish key knowledge and learning objectives we need to put in place as a practice to reach these goals. Following the roadmap’s successful launch, we hope to re-invigorate our conversations around sustainability and consider how our working groups and collaborators can help us meet these challenging longer-term targets. #ribaclimatechallenge2030 #climateemergency #SustainableDesignRoadmap #sustainablearchitecture

1st August is Cycle to Work Day 🚲 Here at Gort Scott, a recent commuting survey revealed our cyclists collectively cycle approximately 55,000km per year - 1.3 times around the Earth! Our annual carbon emissions data showed: 🟢 74% of us cycle to work as all or part of our weekly commute, those that don't cycle either scoot or commute over 100km per week. 🟢 More than half the km we travel are by "active travel", therefore zero emissions - up from 46% in 2023 to 51% in 2024. 📷 Bikes belonging to the Gort Scott team, parked at our office in Bermondsey. #climateaction #cycletoworkday #zerocarbon #londoncycling

Newly published on our website: Quenington Mansions https://lnkd.in/eE4nX9nt We are leading the refurbishment of eight flats within this existing Victorian Mansion in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. Pictured: the existing entrance, existing interiors, and a proposed interior with materials palette. 📷 Thanks to Lorenzo Zandri for the capturing the structural layers and textures of the Victorian building, following the opening-up works. The key design ambition is to add to the existing high-quality architecture on the site, whilst rejuvenating the architectural character of the existing building and improve the design, access, and environmental standards to the wider site. The new proposals are elegant, considerate, and responsive to its context.

3 Mills Studios is shortlisted in AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards 2024, in the Adaptive Reuse into Office category. 3 Mills is a unique remnant of historic London and one of the UK’s foremost film and TV production studios. The locally listed Gin Still, Grade II listed Custom House and the Rush House were brought back into use, creating over 10,000 sq.ft of new workspace. Gort Scott – alongside Freehaus – worked alongside the 3 Mills team and LLDC to deliver a project that balances the adaptation of historic buildings with the needs of creative businesses using the site. A long-life loose fit approach provides flexible spaces that can support different configurations and uses. To preserve the industrial character of the Gin Still, a new structure was inserted into the building, decorated in bold colour and establishing a clear dialogue between new and historic fabric. A passive first approach upgraded the envelope, and utilises its volume and thermal mass to provide natural ventilation. New photography for Bridge Avenue Mansions, documenting the restoration of an Edwardian Mansion block in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The building is 100% tenant occupied with a number of protected tenancies making the refurbishment of the building logistically challenging. The refurbishment work is being strategically phased to minimise disruption to tenants. Phase II, the refurbishment of five apartments was completed in June 2024. The remaining 21 apartments will be refurbished over the coming years to the same high standard. https://lnkd.in/g5MFNnFm Photography: Lorenzo Zandri   #londonarchitecture #interiorphotography #listedbuildings
