🚨 Trump is back – let’s organise the resistance 🚨 The return of Donald Trump is a disaster for the US and the planet – for women, for migrants, people of colour, for Muslims, for trans people and for everyone else his adminstration will target. It is another boost to the global authoritarian right and the consequences could be dire for for the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the increased killings in the Occupied West Bank, and wars in Lebanon and Ukraine. It will embolden violent racist far-right movements seen on our streets in the UK this summer, targeting Muslims, refugees and asylum seekers. It is another blow to efforts to limit global rising temperatures and climate catastrophe. The UK Stop Trump Coalition was formed in January 2017, after Trump was elected for the first time and he declared a “Muslim ban”. Now Stop Trump is mobilising again, ready to oppose his policies once he takes office as well as any UK visits. The US Democrats have again failed to defeat Trumpism, having refused to provide a real alternative on the economy or on Gaza. We cannot allow our own government to keep making the same mistakes. It falls to us all – workers, civil rights activists, feminists, anti-racists, the climate movement, genuine progressives of all stripes – to organise a mass movement and push back, in the UK and across the globe, not only against Trumpism, but also the failed politics that keep it alive. We plan to work in the coming weeks and months to build a broad coalition ready to respond to what comes next. JOIN US: https://lnkd.in/gCjmTgnR
About us
Global Justice Now campaign against the root causes of poverty and inequality. We are a democratically-governed movement made up of local campaign groups based in towns and cities around the UK. Our staff in London and Edinburgh co-ordinate hard-hitting campaigns that challenge the powerful and seek to bring about economic justice for the world’s poor majority. Global poverty is not inevitable. It’s a result of government policies, economic structures and corporate behaviour. As global citizens, we take seriously our responsibility to try and change the structures and policies which keep people poor – starting with those of our own government and British companies. We’re politically and financially independent. The majority of our funding comes from thousands of individual members and supporters. That means we’re able to shine a light into dark corners and speak up for the marginalised when others find it uncomfortable to do so. It’s central to our work that we act in solidarity with activists, civil society organisations and social movements in the global south. We have a history of campaigning with them on a range of issues, from opposing water privatisation to demanding a just solution to the climate crisis. We put pressure on decision-makers, organise public opposition to harmful policies, and produce robust research which shows there are alternatives to corporate-led globalisation. We used to be WDM - World Development Movement.

"What seems to be happening now is that we're telling oil and gas companies they can continue making billions from polluting activities while the rest of us struggle." Our campaigner Izzie on BBC Sunday Morning Live speaking about the need to #MakePollutersPay In the last 12 months, BP and Shell made £30 BILLION. In contrast, the collective total of the 5 most climate vulnerable countries GDPs is £26 BILLION. As COP29 approaches, it's time to #MakePollutersPay climate finance. I'm pretty critical of the way a lot of aid is spent, but I don't think the answer is cutting it to the lowest level in a generation. But that's what Reeves did in the Budget yesterday. Worse, she effectively decided she was going to spend the money on the military instead. This government has zero interest in international development. Even the Tory Shadow Foreign Secretary is criticising them, as is Bill Gates, and a whole bunch of folk who thought the election might be the dawn of a new era. My only hope is that the aid agencies take this moment to rethink their role and how we change the world. The era of cross party consensus on international development is over. Cosy chats with ministers will not get us anywhere. Let's fight for something better. https://lnkd.in/eTQQBtwc

NEW: BP and Shell’s profits over the last year are larger than the combined GDP of the five most climate vulnerable countries. Shell and BP have made a combined total of £30 BILLION since last October. In contrast, the combined total GDP of the five most climate vulnerable countries (Chad, the Solomon Islands, Niger, Micronesia, and Guinea-Bissau) amounts to £26 billion. It is hard to find a starker display of the inequity at the core of the fossil fuel economy. The UK government must prove it is serious about standing up to these shameless corporations as we approach COP29. Providing adequate climate finance – and taxing mega-corporations to fund this – is a clear and obvious step that must be taken. #MakePollutersPAY https://lnkd.in/egzNNpke

Starmer isn’t interested in the Commonwealth talking about reparations for the most grotesque crimes against humanity the world has ever seen. He says it would be better to focus on trade and growth. But here’s what that looks like for him 👇Using British taxpayers money to support multinationals importing critical minerals from Commonwealth countries. So more extractivism, more exports of basic materials on the terms we demand. More of the very colonial relationships for which reparations are rightly being demanded. (True, they specifically mention Australia here. But even there, it’s indigenous people who often face dispossessed as a result of mining.) https://lnkd.in/eNuKEAzh It’s true that reforming the trade system would be a very good form of non-monetary reparation. But there’s nothing in here to suggest that’s what they want – more it looks like a good old fashioned colonial resource grab, dressed up as ‘this will be good for you’. And yes, we do need a green transition, but this FT piece 👇 gives the lie to the idea that this resource grab is all about green industries. Which industries are the real beneficiaries? Military. Aerospace. Car corporations. This is not a just transition. https://lnkd.in/ejf5szvm

The consequences of the UK’s abhorrent history of slavery and colonialism still reverberate globally today – the unequal impact of the global climate crisis is a potent example of how. Paying reparations is a non-negotiable if the UK hopes to meaningfully address the continued consequences of these legacies, and forge relationships rooted in trust and equity with the global south moving forwards. https://lnkd.in/eYQr8uU6

📣 UK must suspend trade talks and privileges with Israel, NGOs say 📣 We alongside 20+ other NGOs including Amnesty International UK, Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights, and War on Want – have written to the UK Government following the ICJ July 19 Advisory Opinion, which placed an obligation on all countries including the UK not to aid or assist Israel’s occupation. The UK’s plans for deeper trade relations look almost certain to benefit industries involved in breaches of international law. Instead of supporting a nation under investigation for genocide, this government must use every means at its disposal to end this violence. https://lnkd.in/e8Yp2UVY

Today I have written to the Business Secretary to demand the UK suspends both the UK-Israel trade deal and talks on a new deal. Britain is under a legal duty not to assist Israel’s war crimes. Our trade relations violate that duty. Our trade deal is supposedly premised on human rights. Hard to imagine a more blatant breach of human rights than Gaza. What’s more, we’re still allowing the import of settlement goods, which are directly assisting Israel’s illegal occupation. This must stop. Worse, the UK says a new trade deal with Israel is a priority. This both rewards Israel for heinous crimes and entrenches our complicity with these crimes, given many of the industries the UK wants closer links with are implicated in Israel’s war. We must end this complicity. Today, I’m pleased to join Amnesty, War on Want, ChristianAid, Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights and more. https://lnkd.in/e5km9MHJ

A 'pact for the future' that doesn't include ending fossil fuel extraction = no future at all. Much more to be done, but this is a reminder that collective action works. 👏 to Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and the thousands of others that helped to make this step forward happen.
Two weeks ago the UN Pact for the Future didn’t mention “fossil fuels” once. 77 Nobel laureates, world leaders, countries, 45,000 individuals and the Fossil Fuel Treaty united to address this major omission. Now the Pact has been updated, with Heads of States stating they “decide to… transition away from fossil fuels” 👏 There is far more to do to push for real action, including the negotiation of a #FossilFuelTreaty, but this is an important revision just 3 weeks out from the Summit of the Future. Share this news to make sure fossil fuels stay in the final Pact.
