Transition mineral supply chains will come to define much of the global economy for a generation. The underlying architecture of international trade is too fundamental to ignore, our campaigner Cleodie writes in our new blog ✍️🏽 https://lnkd.in/e3cTDsqi
About us
Global Justice Now campaign against the root causes of poverty and inequality. We are a democratically-governed movement made up of local campaign groups based in towns and cities around the UK. Our staff in London and Edinburgh co-ordinate hard-hitting campaigns that challenge the powerful and seek to bring about economic justice for the world’s poor majority. Global poverty is not inevitable. It’s a result of government policies, economic structures and corporate behaviour. As global citizens, we take seriously our responsibility to try and change the structures and policies which keep people poor – starting with those of our own government and British companies. We’re politically and financially independent. The majority of our funding comes from thousands of individual members and supporters. That means we’re able to shine a light into dark corners and speak up for the marginalised when others find it uncomfortable to do so. It’s central to our work that we act in solidarity with activists, civil society organisations and social movements in the global south. We have a history of campaigning with them on a range of issues, from opposing water privatisation to demanding a just solution to the climate crisis. We put pressure on decision-makers, organise public opposition to harmful policies, and produce robust research which shows there are alternatives to corporate-led globalisation. We used to be WDM - World Development Movement.

An international treaty to phase out fossil fuels is picking up momentum. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty aims to bring on board enough states willing to leave fossil fuels in the ground to make a serious dent in global emissions, in a way that can’t be blocked or weakened by a minority of obstructive governments. Read Danny Chivers’ report in our latest Temperature Check below👇 https://lnkd.in/eRtiPx-w Endorse the treaty yourself: https://lnkd.in/ehfgDp8M Join or start a campaign: https://lnkd.in/ewDG7Uky

The UK’s partial suspension of arms sales is a result of huge pressure on the government, but it’s nowhere near enough. We need to keep fighting. Pleased to be on @AJEnglish’s The Take today. https://t.co/ojBb7ebDKK

A 'pact for the future' that doesn't include ending fossil fuel extraction = no future at all. Much more to be done, but this is a reminder that collective action works. 👏 to Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and the thousands of others that helped to make this step forward happen.
Two weeks ago the UN Pact for the Future didn’t mention “fossil fuels” once. 77 Nobel laureates, world leaders, countries, 45,000 individuals and the Fossil Fuel Treaty united to address this major omission. Now the Pact has been updated, with Heads of States stating they “decide to… transition away from fossil fuels” 👏 There is far more to do to push for real action, including the negotiation of a #FossilFuelTreaty, but this is an important revision just 3 weeks out from the Summit of the Future. Share this news to make sure fossil fuels stay in the final Pact.

Today we release legal analysis which shows former civil servant Mark Smith was correct. There’s a high chance senior ministers and civil servants could be prosecuted for complicity in Israel’s war crimes. Mpox has been endemic in a handful of African countries for years. Yet despite having the medicines to treat it, no serious action was taken until the outbreak posed a threat to the west. It's time rich countries - including the UK - stand up to big pharma, and back measures in pandemic treaty negotiations that would stop this shameful inequity playing out again and again. Our director Nick Dearden in The Observer this weekend ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eCwDrm69

🚨 NEW REPORT: Etsy is profiting from businesses in illegal Israeli settlements 🚨 Our new report with The Institute for Journalism and Social Change and War on Want identified at least 44 Etsy stores operating in illegal Israeli settlements. Etsy makes money when stores list and sell their items - leading to increased profits for the company. With 100s more sellers listed under 'Israel' without specific locations provided, there may be many more Etsy stores operating from illegal settlements. Etsy’s contracts with shops outside the Americas are with its subsidiary Etsy Ireland UC, where there is strict anti-money laundering legislation. If proceeds from illegal businesses are brought into Ireland, this could leave Etsy exposed to claims it is violating these laws.
