Meaningful engagement with men is vital for achieving sustainable progress towards #genderequality, since men hold disproportionate power in society and contribute to the upholding of patriarchal norms. GIF grantee Rwanda Men's Resource Centre (RWAMREC) recognise this, and use fatherhood as an entry point to engage men and their female partners in Rwanda in an evidence-based, gender norm-shifting innovation. RWAMREC's programme, #Bandebereho ('role model' in Kinyarwanda), offers knowledge about maternal and new-born health, violence prevention and unpaid care work via participatory sessions led by community role models. Results from rigorous testing have showed sustained impacts, including reduced intimate partner violence, improved antenatal care, and better mental health outcomes for men as a result of Bandebereho. With an initial grant of $1.8 million, GIF last year anchored a $4.5 million investment goal over five years. With the help of these funds, RWAMREC is working to improve programme delivery, assess the programme's cost effectiveness, increase uptake to at least three Rwandan districts, and monitor outcomes. How does a community change when one woman decides to speak up and demand for better? Meet Seena, a trailblazer from Munak village of Haryana's Karnal district. Seena, who belongs to a traditionally conservative society, used to be hesitant and lacked the confidence to speak her mind. But getting associated with Breakthrough was a turning point for her. With the encouragement of our Community Developers in her area, Seena decided to become a part of the School Management Committee at the school her daughters learn at. As a SMC member, Seena realised her potential, exercised her agency in taking decisions and assertively negotiated for changes in the school, ranging across infrastructure, sanitation, and gender-sensitive staffing. Seena's story is relevant, given how Breakthrough, British Asian Trust and BT Group's investment in her potential helped her lead changes that challenge traditional norms and bring lasting change to her community.
