As wet weather in the UK has wreaked havoc on farmers’ plans for the year, we’re reminded of the importance of farm resilience in the face of changing climate – a key aim of the Global Farm Metric's mission. However, the extreme weather hasn’t stopped the GFM team from forging ahead with our continued work on creating a common language for farm sustainability – from our international farm trials taking place in Kentucky to the launch of our Farm Sustainability course with BASIS Reg Ltd. 👉 To find out more about our major highlights from the year so far, read our latest project update here: https://lnkd.in/ey8RH8uj 🔗 For future updates from the GFM team, delivered straight your inbox, subscribe to our newsletter: https://lnkd.in/drwJA9M9 Sustainable Food Trust Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs The Andersons Centre Soil Association Exchange Soil Association LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) Natoora Neal's Yard Dairy Organic Association of Kentucky Regen10

🥔For the final analysis in our #TransitionPathways series, we are exploring potatoes in the East of England – the region accounting for one third of England’s potato outputs. Our analysis suggests that adopting regenerative practices will result in a 20% increase in farm profitability within six years. However, due to short-term trade-offs, it is essential that support is in place for farmers to help mitigate the interim impact of transition. This includes: 🍃Practical, context-specific knowledge programs 🌾Longer-term tenures and soil fertility investments from tenants and landlords 🍃Accessible financial incentives and value chain facilitation 🌾A developed data ecosystem For the summary and full analysis, press the link in the comments ⬇️ #Regen10 #Regenerative Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), IUCN, Leaders' Quest, Meridian Institute, Systemiq Ltd., WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, World Farmers' Organisation, Global Alliance for the Future of Food, Sustainable Food Trust, 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People, The Rockefeller Foundation, IKEA Foundation, McKnight Foundation

We're proud to be testing the application of the Global Farm Metric framework with BASIS Reg Ltd, The Andersons Centre, LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), and Soil Association Exchange in our ELMS Test & Trial, supporting farmers in their transition to more resilient and sustainable farming systems. Our early findings resonate with some of the key insights from Soil Association Exchange's latest research into the barriers that farmers are faced with when making the shift to more sustainable agricultural methods. In particular, the financial risk of transitioning for farmers: “I can’t afford to take risks on a field. If I get a job wrong in a field, it would be 10% of the business. The ‘big players’ are able to experiment [with their farming system]”. – from the Soil Association Exchange’s Banking For Change report. 🔗 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dDUrqSNT #RegenerativeAgriculture #SustainableFarming #GlobalFarmMetric
Our latest report 'Banking for Change' gathered research from 120+ farmers across the UK. The need for tailored financial support was clearly expressed, and farmers identified the following as their top two priorities: 1. Financial products with preferential terms during the transition period (47.7%), which would help manage business risks and cash flow needs 2. Financial advisory services integrated with transition planning (43.2%), providing crucial guidance as farmers shift to new systems Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/e4aTM6MK British Business Bank Green Finance Institute #SustainableFarming #RegenAg

🤝 A recent report from #Footprint and Nestlé explores the positive impact that regenerative agriculture can have on local communities, including improved public health on account of the quality of food produced as part of a regenerative farming system. The Global Farm Metric recognises that the nutritional content of food is an important part of sustainability, and is often linked to better social, economic and environmental outcomes. The GFM is an outcomes-based framework that can be used to underpin research and better understand the impacts different farming systems holistically, including nutrition, environmental impacts and social wellbeing. The Sustainable Food Trust's CEO, Patrick Holden, attended the Regenerative Agriculture Series in Amsterdam last month, speaking on a panel about the opportunities and challenges of financing the agricultural transition. Patrick explained that one of the greatest challenges with financing the transition currently is the lack of harmonised measurement to monitor and better understand the sustainability impacts of our global farming systems. The Global Farm Metric defines on-farm sustainability and supports farmers to understand, measure and monitor the state of their farming system in a consistent way. A common framework like the GFM facilitates the collection of harmonised data on climate, nature and social outcomes so that all food and farming stakeholders can understand the sustainability impacts of regenerative farming practices. This data can then be used to inform the development of effective farm support payments, provide access to new markets and underpin sustainable investment by the finance and food industries. This will shift the balance of financial advantage towards more sustainable farming practices. 🔗 To explore the framework in more detail, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/dfJnRKZj 👉 For more from Patrick on financing the agricultural transition, you can read the Forbes article here: https://lnkd.in/ePwWKzs6 #GlobalFarmMetric #Forbes #RegenerativeAgriculture

🌎 🍲 Today marks #WorldFoodDay and this year’s theme is the #RightToFood – right to foods for a better life and a better future. Everyone should have the right to nutritious, safe and affordable food. However, according to the FAO around 733 million people are facing hunger in the world due to climate change, political conflicts, economic decline, inequality and the pandemic. If we’re to see any kind of progress here, then we will need to transform our global food and farming systems so that they are working in harmony with nature and nourishing the health of people and the planet. A transition to more sustainable food and farming systems would deliver benefits for the climate, nature and health, but in order to scale these practices we will first need to develop a harmonised framework which allows us to measure, monitor and understand the sustainability impacts of our farming systems. This is what we're working towards through the Global Farm Metric coalition.
