    Nick Elwell - any thoughts?

Director of External Affairs at Royal Grammar School Newcastle

Remember this? History is about to repeat itself but yet again what’s utterly obvious to me, is overlooked in favour of an easy headline. Until it’s too late. Shortly the UK will become one of the only countries in the world to tax education, despite the catastrophic experience of Greece, where the Government have had to retreat from the same policy due to the unintended consequences. It’s a fallacy that this is about ‘closing a tax loophole’. The independent schools' sector has the same economic footprint as a city the size of Belfast – and its value to the economy is £16.5 billion (Oxford Economics). The amount of tax revenue contributed to by the sector is already £5.1 billion a year! Almost 330,000 jobs are supported by the sector, equivalent to the staffing of Asda, Sainsbury’s and the Co-Op supermarkets combined. I don’t believe for a second that levying VAT on independent school fees will generate anywhere near the wildly ambitious income in the Government's flawed forecasts. This is about ideology, levelling down, destroying schools that are showing what good, properly funded education looks like. Taxing into oblivion what is working and is the envy of the world, instead of building upon it as part of a diverse educational eco-system which offers a spectrum of provision, for a spectrum of children’s needs. I’m heartbroken that it is the regional schools like Royal Grammar School Newcastle that will be most affected by this policy, a school born from philanthropy and which has social impact front and centre to all we do. And it is our parents who genuinely already compromise lifestyles that others enjoy, in order to spend their already-taxed income on education. Many of which have needs that are just not met elsewhere. And to bring this forward to mid-way through an academic year, giving parents no room to carefully plan a transition for their children, is plain cruel. Those who can afford it will buy up houses in the catchment areas of outstanding State schools, creating even more inequality. At the cost of the State. Teachers who can exodus the UK (to work in overseas schools without regressive taxation) will go. Engage with the Independent Schools’ Sector! Mandate us to spend 20% of our revenue on genuinely impactful work for the benefit of the whole school sector. Give us responsibility for recruiting and training teachers. Embrace us as the solution to accommodate looked-after children. Ensure State schools have fair selection policies. Keir Starmer whatever you do please don’t destroy the lives of children and families who can least cope, instead give them the chances afforded to you at the Independent school you were supported to attend. Before it’s too late and we realise all the unintended consequences.

An interesting question: How many of us have to suffer scamming , fraud and hacking before something is seriously done to stop this type of activity . Why should we expect others to look after us? Should we, perhaps, not be doing a little more to look after ourselves?

Sophisticated hackers, relentless cyber criminals, and distracted employees have created a perilous cyber crime landscape that benefits the hackers only! The global average cost of a data breach is up 15% in three years. In the US, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center received over 800,000 complaints last year, with potential losses exceeding $10.2 billion. If you haven't yet experienced a cyberattack, ransomware scheme, or data breach, consider yourself very lucky. Nearly 75% of organisations have faced at least one cyber attack. Who's next? Cyber criminals are making their attacks more targeted. Easy pickings are a target. Even vigilant employees can be easily tricked but remote/hybrid workforces using numerous networks increase vulnerability, exponentially. With the help of generative AI, used by 'the bad guys' these attacks seem more authentic and harder to stop than ever. While cyber security is essential, it's not enough. A comprehensive cyber resilience plan probably including insurance is crucial to aid recovery quickly when an attack succeeds.  Waiting to take action will result in a poor outcome.

Perhaps yesterday's global outage will help everyone understand the importance of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill mentioned in the King’s Speech. Although the outage was not a 'cyber attack' it was an outage that demonstrated quickly and globally how much we rely on Internet services. We hope this , new legislation will help keep us all safe and secure in the 21st century. Basic, inexpensive training is available from Gambryce.io.
