As part of last week's Budget, the Government announced a review of the Mandatory Bank Referral programme. FXE has been an advocate for addressing the underlying issues that are holding back businesses from accessing finance. We are looking forward to the review setting out why so many businesses are unable to successfully access finance through the programme – and what will truly make a difference to these businesses. Good to see The Sunday Times picking up on this important discussion and quoting Katrin Herrling, CEO of Funding Xchange, on the 94 percent of companies referred through the schemes who “do not have a profile that allows them to successfully access funding as they are too young or have blemished credit records, have not managed their payment obligations, or fallen behind in filing annual accounts.” She said the scheme did not provide feedback to these companies “to help them understand why banks or other lenders are declining their applications.” FXE is working with industry leaders, like the NACFB, designated banks and UK Finance, to support the HMT-led review with data-led insights into the challenges that businesses are experiencing and the help that will enable businesses to build fundable profiles to successfully access financing. The UK’s $1.1 trillion tech industry has had much of its value created by companies who have been through Tech Nation’s Future Fifty programme, including Starling Bank, Skyscanner, Zoopla (part of Houseful) and Darktrace. That’s why, when Founders Forum Group acquired Tech Nation last year, relaunching the Future Fifty programme was a top priority for us. A business is only a collection of individuals striving to make a difference. We are incredibly lucky to have a talented group of people who are committed to making a difference every day. FXE is fortunate to regularly welcome talented interns who are still at university and are exploring what the world of business can offer them. Over the years, we have found that internships are a valuable investment: We have seen interns own projects that have a direct impact on what we are delivering to clients. Our teams have loved working collaboratively with interns. Our culture has been enriched by interns. This year, Joseph joined our Analytics team to collaborate with Erikas Kamaitis to explore affordability models in SME lending - contributing to FXE's thought-leadership in the assessment of SME profiles. Joseph recently presented the insights from the project to the entire company before his return to university. Today, fewer internship opportunities are available as mixed and remote working has taken a heavy toll on summer placements. We hope this reminder of how much both sides have to gain may just lead to a couple more places being created...
And my time at Funding Xchange comes to an end. A huge thank you to Katrin Herrling, Erikas Kamaitis and the entire FXE team. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience and I've learned so much!

Has the time for reforming Mandatory Bank Referrals come? The prize for getting it right is significant: Tackling the underlying reasons for bank declines - by helping businesses take simple actions to boost their credit profile - has the potential to unlock £3B in additional funding to UK businesses. Katrin Herrling's article in the NACFB Magazine outlines how reform of the Mandatory Bank Referral scheme can contribute to improving access to finance and getting the eco-system to collaborate more effectively. A second chance for a SME referral system? “Banks are now more, not less, reticent to share feedback or decline reasons, due in part to concerns that doing so will result in costly disputes,” says Katrin Herrling, CEO and co-founder of Funding Xchange. Writing in the summer edition of Commercial Broker, Katrin looks into the underlying reasons for bank declines and how Funding Xchange has adopted a new approach to support SMEs. Meet our Managing Director, Sarah Hollyhead, talking about her personal journey and what it means to her to combine raising a young family with growing a business. Working in a FinTech where the majority of executives is female is normal. At least for us. #Normal #Femaleleaders Katrin Herrling Laura Wathen Michelle Carr Lauren K White Kirsten Knight Aamara Khan
I was recently invited to talk about my experience as a senior woman (and mum) working in Fintech. I very much enjoyed talking about my journey, the highs, the challenges along the way and more so hearing hearing the stories of the 11 other incredible women who also took part. Sara Benjamin Jessica Carroll Valentina Drofa Calypso Harland Iba Jaggi Amanda Mocekkub Lucy Mullins Sarah Sinclair Valeria Vahorovska Ele Ward I'm a big advocate of finding ways to help people recognise that the challenges they face are rarely unique and find strength in that understanding. I'd like to thank Fintech specialists Drofa Comms and all the amazing people I've met with over the years that have helped (and continue to help) me with my own realisations and given me the strength to keep going.
