📑 New Report! With 1.4 billion people and a prosperous economy, #China is a key player in the global climate narrative. Recognizing this, the Chinese government has set ambitious #NetZero targets, committing to peak greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. While accelerating the shift towards clean energy is critical, new analysis from FOLU highlights the central role that healthy and sustainable #diets can and must play in meeting these goals. Using multiple climate models, the research compares the agricultural emissions projections of three consumption scenarios by 2050: 👉 Business-as-usual 👉 Full implementation of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines (CDG) 👉 Widespread adoption of the EAT Lancet Planetary Health Diet Critically, the analysis finds that: 📈 Agricultural emissions would reach 904 MtCO2e per year in China if consumption patterns continue on a business-as-usual track, up from a 2020 baseline of 806 MtCO2e. 🌽 Full implementation of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines would result in 46% fewer emissions than the business-as-usual scenario, aligning the agricultural sector with a 1.5C warming pathway. 🍐 Widespread adoption of the Eat Lancet Planetary Health Diet would see the biggest reduction agricultural emissions, resulting in a 51% drop compared to the business-as-usual consumption scenario. 🍚 China’s agricultural-source GHG emissions and associated mitigation potentials vary significantly by region –provinces with the highest emissions also offer the greatest mitigation potential. 🐖 In most provinces, and for China as a whole, reducing methane from livestock production would see the biggest impact Read the report for a deep-dive on key climate and nutrition interlinkages, and why healthy and sustainable diets are a key lever in delivering on the #ParisAgreement 👇 📖 Read report: https://lnkd.in/evurAVKq 💡 Read blog: https://lnkd.in/eBM_ZqMz #COP29 #HealthyDiets #SustainableDiets #EATLancet #FoodSystems #ClimateSolutions #Methane #MethaneEmissions #Agriculture -- WRI Food World Resources Institute Action On Food Food Tank EAT Gunhild Anker Stordalen WWF-China Renmin University of China International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Minpeng CHEN Nicklas Forsell Shenggen Fan Geist*Studio

🎄 🎁 The holidays are a time for gathering, sharing meals, and celebrating abundance. But they’re also a time when food waste tends to skyrocket. Did you know that global food loss and waste might be even greater than we think? The commonly cited figure is that one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted. When on-farm losses are factored in, this estimate could climb to nearly 40%. Why is it so challenging to measure food loss and waste with precision? And why do these gaps in data persist despite years of research? This article from the @World Resources Institute (WRI) delves into the complexities of tracking food loss and waste worldwide. It emphasizes the critical need to improve measurement systems and understand where waste occurs to drive targeted, impactful actions. 💡 Tackling food loss and waste isn’t just about numbers—it’s about feeding more people, reducing the strain on our planet’s resources, and respecting the food that sustains us. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gYYM-EBN Liz Goodwin Brian Lipinski #FoodWaste #FoodLoss #SustainableHolidays #FoodSystems #FoodAndLandUse

🌳🏜️How do we value the role of a standing forest in the fight against desertification? As we approach the end of COP16 (focused on desertification), it's crucial to address the imbalance in global financial flows that is having a detrimental impact on nature. In 2022, the global financial system directed 35 times more resources toward activities that harm our planet than those that nurture it. This must change if we are to combat desertification and protect our planet's most vulnerable ecosystems. A new documentary by Nature4Climate and If Not Us Then Who?, part of the Nature in Action series, explores how Brazil is transforming its economy with a socio-bioeconomy market. This innovative model promotes sustainable agricultural practices, respects traditional cultures, and helps achieve climate, biodiversity, and land restoration goals—all while providing jobs and fair compensation. 📽️https://lnkd.in/dcjvV4-w

With #COP16 on desertification underway in Riyadh, now is the perfect moment to reflect on the restoration of degraded lands and the critical role of inclusive solutions. Nearly two decades ago in southwestern Kenya, 64 indigenous women’s groups united to restore the Mau Forest ecosystem. Their success highlights how inclusive funding models empower grassroots organizations to carry out vital restoration work. Women-led initiatives and alternative finance are proving to be game-changers in combating desertification. 🌍 Discover more about how these approaches are driving meaningful change: https://lnkd.in/eqsdguSX ✍🏼 Mercy Mulanga Caroline Njiru Christine Mboya #LandRestoration #Desertification #COP16 #WomenLeadership #Sustainability #ClimateAction
Indigenous women are the custodians of their land. They possess deep knowledge of their local landscapes and native species. From seed selection to soil management, their wisdom is crucial for restoration efforts to succeed.
