His research project is co-funded by Food, Farming and Countryside Commission (FFCC), and is specifically focused 🔦 on Bangladeshi caterers in the West Midlands 📍 as the case study. We're excited to announce that registration is now open for the LUNZ Hub Big Tent event at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on September 19th 🎉 🎉 🎉 Effecting change in land use requires recognising and engaging with a complex web of relationships and perspectives. To address this the LUNZ Hub is convening a series of events around the UK to develop inclusive dialogues about land use transitions for Net Zero. These Big Tent Events are designed to facilitate creative discussion and learning about individual and organisational views concerning the value, prospects, and challenges of transitioning land use to achieve Net Zero and meet the needs of people and nature. The first of these will take place in Edinburgh on September 19th. We aim to foster knowledge exchange between policymakers, farmers, land users, advisory practitioners, businesses, community groups, environmental organisations, and researchers with interests in land use change and the challenges and opportunities presented by Net Zero transitions within the UK. The discussions and activities will be structured into three themes: 1. Listening to people’s views on land use and Net Zero 2. Implementing change 3. This is not what citizens are telling us Food, Farming and Countryside Commission through our the #FoodConversation https://lnkd.in/em6_hx9X As Food, Farming and Countryside Commission CEO Sue Pritchard recently stated: "Action on food systems has proved notoriously hard to mobilise. Perhaps because there’s usually enough cheap food on supermarket shelves, governments have been persuaded, by the powerful lobbyists for big food businesses, that it’s not really a problem at all. Or those problems could be solved if “consumers just make better choices”. But when you open the doorway on the food system as a whole, and it’s relationships with health, with farming and land use, with the climate and nature crisis, with economic justice and inequalities, it is clear that food is at the heart of many serious challenges that governments can no longer ignore. Citizens want greener, healthier, fairer food and farming. And they expect government to step up and act. They point out that the issues are so far reaching that we can’t, as one said, “consume our way out of a structural crisis”. In Scotland this is a pivotal time as we move from aspiration to action #GoodFoodNation It's also an opportune time to ask citizens what action they want. In a new piece for Farmers Guardian, FFCC's Farming Futures Policy Lead Dr Charlie Taverner reflects on the current emphasis on herbal leys in DEFRA's Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) – and whether this focus aligns with the scheme's long-term goals 👉 https://lnkd.in/e5TRGwAS Charlie also sets out some other actions government could take to rebuild confidence in farming – and create a resilient, sustainable and profitable farming sector fit for the future. "There are some low-cost ways that Ministers could rebuild dwindling confidence. They could be upfront about their long-term plan for how they want Britain's farmers to farm. They could publish a transparent and accountable land use framework that balances the need for food, nature, housing, energy and all the other demands. And they could produce a regular impact report on how the various schemes are affecting food production and hitting environmental targets."
