Pioneering the future of renewable energy.

About us

Flotation Energy Ltd delivers clean, green, renewable energy by using our expertise in floating and fixed offshore wind and the energy transition, supporting achievement of carbon-neutral commitments. Perhaps best known for our involvement in Kincardine – the world’s largest grid connected floating offshore windfarm; our team has progressed from pioneering demonstrator energy transition and floating offshore wind projects to delivering fast-tracked commercial scale offshore wind and energy transition projects. Flotation Energy is in a strong position to make use of its unique combination of experience, expertise, and insight in offshore wind to identify and develop fixed and floating offshore wind projects. Our business model is to identify offshore wind energy prospects in key target markets and progress these through the complex development process to full scale commercial projects that minimise risk and maximise value. Our existing portfolio of projects in development includes fixed bottom offshore windfarms (480MW Morecambe; 1200 MW Greystones; 1,500 MW Seadragon) and floating offshore windfarms (100MW White Cross, 1,500 MW Blackwater and up to 500 MW Green Volt). Flotation Energy plc was established in 2018 by Allan MacAskill and Nicol Stephen. We have offices in the UK (Scotland), Australia, Taiwan and Japan.

We are delighted to announce that, along with our joint venture partner Vårgrønn, we have selected Aberdeen as the strategic and operational headquarters for our £2.5bn Green Volt project.   This paves the way for the development of Europe's first commercial-scale floating offshore windfarm in North East Scotland. Up to 40 direct jobs will be based at Green Volt’s new HQ in the Granite City, which is expected to trigger around £2.5bn of investment and deliver 2,800 jobs.   Nicol Stephen, Chief Executive of Flotation Energy said: “Green Volt is a trailblazing, multibillion pound floating offshore wind project which will kickstart jobs and investment by companies right across the UK offshore supply chain. The choice of our HQ in Aberdeen is clear evidence of our strong commitment to support local jobs and businesses wherever possible.”   Aberdeen was selected for its world-renowned expertise, innovation and its status as home to the largest concentration of subsea supply chain companies in Europe, making it a natural choice for this key energy infrastructure project.   The news comes as 10 Downing Street announces thousands of jobs across the green industries, welcoming more than £24 billion of private investment for pioneering energy projects, including Green Volt, ahead next week’s International Investment Summit.   For more information, see https://lnkd.in/eDTX6pnp RenewableUK, Scottish Renewables, Energy Transition Zone Ltd, Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, Invest Aberdeen

The second and final day of #FloatingWind24 included our presentation of Norwegian Offshore Wind’s FWD Floating Wind Award.   Announced as award winners by the Norwegian State Secretary for Energy back in May at the FWD industry flagship event in Haugesund, it was a real privilege for our team to be presented with the accolade at Floating Offshore Wind ’24.   Collected by Alexander Quayle CEng FIMechE, Project Director for Green Volt, the award highlights the hard work our teams are pouring in to drive forward the scaling of floating wind in the UK and through our project pipeline, across other markets around the world.   As included in the Floating Offshore Wind Taskforce report, published by UK Government and industry earlier this week – FOW is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that by 2050 could employ a 100,000 people and contribute £47 billion to the UK economy. In short, the time is now. Thank you to Norwegian Offshore Wind, Caroline Whittle, Monica Bårdsen

Day one at #Floatingwind24, Aberdeen in the bag and it has been an exceptionally busy one for our colleagues, with a number of sessions and panels. Tim Hunter, Floating Systems Technical Authority presented on the opportunities and challenges of re-industrialising the UK for floating offshore wind. Focusing on the rapid progress of Green Volt, our pioneering floating project with JV partner Vårgrønn, Tim posed very real questions around localisation: what's practical; what's valuable; and most importantly, what's achievable in the short, medium and long term of the floating wind sector. Vicky Goodwin, Flotation Energy's O&M Technical Authority was later on an ORE Catapult panel discussing issues around access for floating wind. When it comes to O&M activities, challenges often differ from fixed bottom, with more consideration for variations such as motion and accessibility. Learning from existing fixed developments will provide a solid foundation on which to build out our floating offshore wind O&M strategies, but won't provide all the answers. Victoria's key asks were for better engagement between designers, more transparent data and better modelling as cornerstones to determining optimal strategies. To close the day in the main Conference room, Keith Johnston, Supply Chain Manager led off in a Rapid-Fire Updates session alongside fellow INTOG developers. Keith overviewed Green Volt before providing insight to the supply chain on upcoming project milestones as part of our procurement strategy. #Floatingwind24 RenewableUK, Scottish Renewables National Manufacturing Institute Scotland

We are launching a consultation on our Cenos offshore windfarm this week with a consultation event tomorrow (1 October 2024) at Peterhead Football Club, Aberdeenshire. The Cenos project team will be on hand to provide information about the windfarm development project and answer questions during two sessions from 12-3pm and 4-7pm. The local event in Peterhead is part of our wider pre-application consultation on certain offshore aspects of the Cenos project, running from Tuesday 1 October to Wednesday 16 October 2024. With a nominal capacity of up to 1350 MW, Cenos is a ground-breaking, commercial scale floating wind project that will provide renewable power to the UK grid and the possibility to electrify and decarbonise a number of offshore oil and gas platforms in the UK North Sea. Delivered as part of Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round, once complete Cenos will be one of the world’s largest floating offshore windfarms. Cenos is being delivered in partnership with Vårgrønn. To find out more, visit https://lnkd.in/g5NJMJrE

Last week we visited peers at the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland in the Greater Glasgow Area. As leaders in precision engineering and advanced manufacturing, we are delighted to be working with NMIS across a number of workstreams that sit at the heart of enabling the scaling-up of floating offshore wind in the UK. In sharing cross-sector expertise, we are widening the deep technical understanding of what is required to deliver these ground-breaking offshore wind projects. We are also learning from commercial experiences in aerospace, automotive and other engineering sectors that will inform and drive a successful re-industrialisation strategy -needed to deliver offshore wind in the UK more widely. We look forward to continue working at pace with NMIS over the months and years ahead, as we collectively work through the challenges and opportunities that face the UK in delivering the energy transition. #Floatingwind #Offshorewind
