On a recent trip to London, whilst having dinner in a lovely old pub, I noticed the message "Dinner Lubricates Business" painted on the wall. I am sure that this is true, and many business deals have been struck over dinner in the pub! But are meals allowable against tax? If you are entertaining a client or a supplier, the answer is no (contrary to popular belief!). You can pay for it from your business account, but the expense will be added back in the tax computations. If you are away from home on a business trip, then the meal is likely to be an allowable expense as it is subsistence. If you are entertaining employees, then it is an allowable expense if it is an annual event, it's open to all of your employees, and it costs less than £150 per head. #food #tax #meals #pub #subsistence #entertainment #business #dinner

If you run a limited company, new Companies House rules mean that your registered office address must be “appropriate”. You can no longer use a PO Box address for your registered office. The address you register must be a physical address in the UK in the same country your company is registered in, for example a company registered in Scotland must have a registered office address in Scotland. The address must also be ‘appropriate’. This means that you, or someone acting on behalf of your company, will be made aware of any post addressed and delivered to your company. Animal breeders have been an HMRC target since a taskforce was set up in 2015, with information being gathered on individuals who were suspected of incorrectly declaring their income from the sale of puppies. Once again, 'nudge' letters are being sent out encouraging animal breeders to correct their tax positions voluntarily or face an enquiry and higher penalties. HMRC can obtain information from various sources, including pet insurers and online trading sites. If you have sold the litter of a family pet, it is unlikely you will be targeted, but if you are trading as an animal breeder you may receive a letter. Size really does matter when it comes to VAT, as the recent upper tribunal decision about mega marshmallows show. HMRC argued that they should be classed as confectionery and standard rated, however, the decision is that they are zero rated as they are items of food usually requiring further preparation.
