Fat Macy's
Food and Beverage Services
Social enterprise restaurant & catering staffed by young Londoners living in hostels, to help save for housing deposits.
About us
Founded in 2016 as a social enterprise running pop-up supper clubs and catered events across London, Fat Macy’s works with young Londoners living in temporary accommodation. We provide a pathway towards independent living by inviting them to create and curate culinary pop-up events across the capital. HOW DOES IT WORK? The problem we are tackling is common - in the current socio-economic climate, residents find it increasingly challenging to save money to move on into independent living, due to the bureaucratic benefit system, sanctions and the daily expense of hostel living. Fat Macy’s overcomes this by using the project’s profits to create a specified housing deposit scheme for our participants. With every pop-up event, each chef can make an independent and progressive step in saving securely for their future. The chefs volunteer their time, and in return accumulate credit, paid into a secure deposit fund, which is held until they have saved enough for a deposit. At this point, we require a tenancy agreement and an employment contract before we pay the deposit directly to the landlord of their choice. WHAT’S THE BENEFIT? In contrast to many of the existing initiatives within hostel accommodation, Fat Macy's provides a structured opportunity, with a clear and tangible incentive for its participants. Alongside increasing personal savings, Fat Macy’s chefs are trained in vital skills for independent living: food hygiene, cooking, financial planning, curating and running events and practical work experience.

The demand for rented accommodation is increasing, with 25% fewer properties available on the private rental market than in 2019. A BBC report last year found that on average, rental properties were attracting 20 viewings each - up from 6 viewings in 2019. Another consequence of this demand is the increasing use of 'holding deposits'. Holding deposits are a way to 'reserve' a property whilst you go through pre-tenancy checks. They can be up to one week's rent, which for a one-bedroom flat in London could be well over £300. The use of holding deposits has added yet another obstacle to those trying to leave temporary accommodation. Unless you have a spare £300, you are likely to miss out on properties to those with access to more funds. At Fat Macy's, we're currently trying to find ways to support our graduates to pay holding deposits when needed, but we need your help! Fat Macy's reposted this
Thank you Brigitte Small FRSA Charisma Mehta for visiting us at Fat Macy's today. And thank you sally LOVUTTA coker for joining the workshop. It was really interesting listening in and understanding how we could be using AI to support tenancy sustainment.
So brilliant to spend a sunny morning in Shoreditch in a co-design workshop with people seeking to move out of temporary accommodation into the private rental sector. Many thanks to Fat Macy's for hosting us and being such great partners. 💜

Thanks to the money raised by the 2023 Big Supper Club, we have been able to further invest in our team's development. We hold regular whole team workshops, focusing on the areas our frontline team identify for development. This training in turn leads to better outcomes for our trainees and graduates. (A chance to dig into the teams communal biscuits is an additional benefit 🍪) We want to ensure we can continue to develop our team, to respond to the ever changing challenges that our trainees and graduates face in this current climate. To help us, you can take part in our Fat Macy's Big Supper Club 👉 https://lnkd.in/dA6Y3_Ry

Today is World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day. Mental health and stable housing are connected in many ways. Insecure housing can negatively impact someone’s mental health. Mental health issues can also be a contributing factor in forcing people into homelessness. Common mental health problems are over twice as high among people who are homeless compared with the general population. At Fat Macy’s, our trainees receive well being support from their P+E Officers, and have access to free counselling and life coaching. Trainees take the lead on what support they need to reach their goal of stable housing, because we believe they are experts in themselves. However, the journey from temporary accommodation to stable housing remains a challenge for our trainees. There needs to be more safe, secure and affordable housing for all. It is crucial that there is further investment in mental health services, in affordable housing and in homeless services. Alongside Homeless Link and other leading homeless charities in the UK, we have written to the Chancellor to safeguard the sector in the Autumn Budget and commit to review spending on homelessness as part of the upcoming Spending Review.
