Last week, we invited 90 pupils from local primary schools to come into Asda House as we launched the first of three school engagement programmes. As part of the Asda Heroes programme the primary school children learnt about sustainability issues such as food waste and hunger, and as part of a year long plan, these students will now work with their local Asda Community Champions and the early careers team to understand how these issues impact their local community, how they can reduce their waste in school as well as making a positive impact on their local community by becoming global citizens. Each of the three programmes will touch upon ESG related issues, and willl be heavily aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. September has been really exciting for our Corporate Affairs team. See below just a few of the things they’ve been up to! ⭐️ We announced the launch of Cashpots for Schools – our campaign to make millions of pounds available to UK primary schools through Asda Rewards. This game changing new campaign is fronted by Joe Wicks and more than £2.5m has already been donated. 💚 We updated Members of Parliament about our Investing in Spaces and Places grant winners. With more than £1.2m awarded to 65 groups across the UK, this is our biggest grant award since ISP was launched. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We hosted a Community Celebration event in Edinburgh at the Scottish Parliament. The event was attended by 49 cross-party MSPs, and after the event, the First Minister, John Swinney, sent a letter to all of our Scottish Community Champions to praise them for their work. A further six motions were also lodged in the Scottish Parliament in September, welcoming Asda Foundation grants into their communities. ✅ We were delighted to welcome Andy Burnham, Mayor of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, to our Trafford Park Supercentre. During the visit we discussed Asda’s exciting growth strategy, our food waste initiatives, and how Asda is supporting colleagues' skills and learning. 📄 Alongside our Head of Town Planning, we met with the MHCLG to discuss the recent NPPF consultation and have subsequently submitted formal representations. 🌹 We attended the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, where we co-sponsored a reception hosted by Labour Together. The event was very well attended speeches were delivered by various members of the government. Throughout the conference, we had lots of conversations with MPs and business representatives, who praised our Cashpot for Schools campaign and our high value Investing in Spaces and Places grants. ⛰️ Finally, some of our team took part in the annual Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise funds for Tickled Pink and our breast cancer charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! Between them, they have raised £1145 for our charity partners.

We are continuing our work to reduce food waste with the extension of our Too Good To Go partnership, with nearly 1000 sites across our estate now offering shoppers surplus food for a fraction of the original cost. Asda Supermarket and Express customers will be able to purchase via the Too Good To Go app food items nearing their use-by date, but still edible – helping to prevent good food from going to waste. Alongside our existing food waste reduction partners, Too Good To Go will play an important role in continuing the progress we’ve made to date in redistributing or redirecting surplus food from going to waste and our ongoing support for customers, communities and charities. 🛍️🍎🥖

Asda has today launched a new sustainability-linked feature to our existing Supply Chain Finance programme, offering competitive financing to incentivise a significant number of suppliers to become more sustainable. Working with HSBC, we’re encouraging suppliers to share their sustainability data, establish ESG commitments, and act towards those goals. We recognise the importance of supporting and engaging with suppliers to drive progress within our supply chain – with the support of our banking partners, such as Rabobank who also support this programme, this new voluntary feature will encourage better sustainability practices within our supply chain 🌍♻️💚
