Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) offers an environmentally friendly alternative for road construction by recycling old asphalt instead of relying on new materials. RAP is created by milling or crushing existing pavement to produce recycled bitumen, which serves as a base for new asphalt mixes. However, when RAP is stored for extended periods, it can accumulate moisture levels of 8 to 9 percent or more, which increases the energy required to reheat and process the material by about 20 percent. As a result, it is widely believed that covering a RAP pile of around 2,000 tons could lead to energy savings exceeding £1 million over a three-year period. As we approach the completion of our 170th building in the UK, it’s a good time to reflect on why so many customers choose Eurodome Ltd timber domes… The National Winter Service Research Group (NWSRG) emphasises that maintaining dry salt plays a crucial role in winter road management. By keeping salt dry, its spreading efficiency improves significantly, as dry salt flows more easily through spreading equipment, ensuring even coverage across road surfaces. This is particularly important for maximising the effectiveness of salt during icy conditions. Additionally, dry salt enhances the process of pre-wet gritting, where salt is mixed with brine before being applied to roads. Pre-wetting helps the salt stick better to the road surface, reducing bounce and scatter, and allowing it to work faster in melting ice. As a result, road safety is improved since treated surfaces become safer more quickly.
