About us
We urgently need to balance the needs of all people with the needs of our planet to ensure a safe and just future for all. We are draining natural resources, destroying ecosystems, and to avoid further climate crisis, emissions must drop drastically in the next decade. Meanwhile, there continues to be vast inequality across the world, with millions of people still without their basic human rights met. Engineering has played a significant role – both good and bad – in getting humankind and the planet to where we are today. Typically, the engineering community still relies on unsustainable practices and materials, with limited consideration of the broader impact. The building and construction sector alone is responsible for 38% of global emissions. Engineering education and practice used to evolve with the needs of society. Evidence shows that this has stagnated, with a recent survey finding that 93% of UK engineering companies with a sustainability strategy do not have staff with the skills to fulfill it. This has to change. We need to move away from outdated working methods and prioritising profit over people and planet. With a different approach, the engineering community has the power to rapidly transform our world for the better. Since 2001, Engineers Without Borders UK has been inspiring the engineering community to commit to global responsibility. As society moves towards the deadline to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, we will collaborate with companies, universities and a wide variety of organisations to mainstream globally responsible engineering and develop unstoppable momentum towards achieving social and environmental justice through engineering. Whether you are an engineer, academic, university student, or involved with engineering in any way, we want and need you to be a part of this movement for change.

Did you know the extent to which gender bias affects our design outcomes? 🔍 With men continuing to account for the majority of designers, engineers, and even test subjects, many of the products and services we rely on every day carry an implicit gender bias. From safety equipment to medical devices, designs are often optimised for the "default" male user, leaving gaps that can affect women and other underrepresented groups. 🚨 To ensure that the future we create is fair, just, and truly inclusive, we need to incorporate diverse perspectives at every stage of the design and engineering process. Find more information, examples and case studies at Inclusive Engineering, linked as part of our online Learning Library.💡⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eTTRjnZM The Global Responsibility Learning Library is a free curated bank of practical learning that will help you to build your knowledge, apply your skills and develop your mindset. #InclusiveDesign #EquityInEngineering #DesignForAll Statistics taken from: US National Institute of Health, Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender and Leadership

🚀 Excited to share a recent milestone! 🚀 I just completed the Engineers Without Borders UK Globally Responsible Engineering simulation with Engineers Without Borders UK on Forage. 🌍✨ Throughout the experience, I: ✅ Planned inclusive co-design sessions for a sensitive project ✅ Analyzed inmate and staff perspectives to inform design decisions ✅ Developed strategies for engaging diverse stakeholders effectively ✅ Reviewed ethical considerations to make informed engineering decisions ✅ Drafted a commencement speech that highlighted the importance of responsible engineering in practice This simulation has deepened my understanding of how engineers can play a critical role in creating solutions that are not only technically sound but also ethically responsible, socially inclusive, and globally impactful. Looking forward to applying these insights in future projects and continuing to advocate for globally responsible engineering! #EngineeringForGood #SustainableEngineering #GloballyResponsibleEngineering #InclusiveDesign #EngineersWithoutBordersUK #Forage #CareerGrowth #EngineeringEthics #Sustainability

“Only 31% of engineers feel included in the environment they work in.” This #WorldMentalHealthDay we’re highlighting the findings of the latest ‘Masculinity in Engineering’ report by EqualEngineers, ahead of the launch of their 2024 survey. This important research aims to spotlight and improve the state of mental well-being among men in engineering, with the view that this will create a more inclusive work culture for all. Keep an eye out for our upcoming interview with Dr. Mark McBride-Wright MBE CEng MIChemE FEI, founder of Equal Engineers, where we look further at the relationship between masculinity and engineering. 👁️🗨️
