Our CEO James de le Vingne joined a roundtable this week to explore issues currently facing small business finance. Led by the British Business Bank (BBB), the roundtable saw James spotlight current and future lending priorities for EO businesses. This aligns with our Manifesto ask for setting a small business funding target. It also builds on recent eoa work on how the BBB can support Labour’s target to ‘double the size of the mutual and coop sector’. Overall, we developed stronger relations and provided attendees with an improved understanding of the power of EO. Keep reading for more! 1. Unified Approach for Long-Term Growth With the Spring Budget, Industrial Strategy, UK Investment Summit, and National Wealth Fund launch ahead, these initiatives must align closely. Collaboration and clarity across these areas are vital for fostering long-term UK growth and competitiveness. This links to our call for a tax roadmap. 2. Ambitious Investment Targets The government's 3:1 private investment target emphasises its commitment to private sector growth. Achieving this requires strategic alignment between public and private sectors. Encouragingly, corporate venturing and pension investment opportunities in the UK are rising. 3. Pensions and the 'Adequacy' Concern Pension adequacy is increasingly prioritised. We must consider how to unlock pension funds for investment in UK businesses. 4. Keeping UK Businesses at Home To maintain competitiveness, it's crucial to offer better domestic growth and investment opportunities. EO is noted as a potential stabiliser. 5. Aligning Capital with Market Needs There’s ample capital, but it's often tied to outdated government programs rather than current market needs. Aligning these funds with Labour’s missions and market demands is an opportunity. 6. Regional Growth and Local Jobs Need Attention Support for regional and national growth is strong, but the investment needs for Local Growth Plans must better integrate with the Industrial Strategy to ensure cohesive UK development. 7. People vs. Currency: A Needed Shift Labour's focus is shifting towards prioritising people—the driving force behind businesses and the economy. EO presents a significant opportunity here. 8. Supporting Wealth Creation and Distribution Financial incentives currently favour wealth creation, but there’s a need for mechanisms that also support wealth distribution, fostering more inclusive growth. 9. Clarity on Business Growth Priorities While there’s alignment on the needed capital types and distribution mechanisms, there’s insufficient clarity on the specific business types the government aims to support. Clearer priorities will guide investment and strategy. #Business #Finance #Tax #Lending #EmployeeOwnership
