The moment is now. We’re excited to officially launch our new report, Building Prosperity: Unlocking the potential of a nature-positive, circular economy for Europe. The study shows that a targeted set of investable and scalable actions in the built environment sector can deliver significant economic, environmental, and social benefits for Europe, increasing resilience, competitiveness, and the vibrancy of its cities. It also aims to show that circular and nature-positive strategies can be applied across sectors. The circular built environment can propel Europe towards a prosperous and nature-positive future. It’s here – in this sector – we must sow the seeds of change. And we can start right now. Read it today: https://lnkd.in/eZJ6G2_z #CircularEconomy

We must look to the natural world as a model for how to design and innovate. Here, Janine Benyus, Author, Co-Founder of The Biomimicry Institute and Biomimicry 3.8, shares her thoughts on our nature-positive future. You can see her full perspective as an endorser in our latest report, Building Prosperity, here: https://lnkd.in/du-WTHET “As humans, we impact lands we build on, farms that feed us, working forests that house us, mines that supply our industries. Most reports look through the lens of risk associated with the degradation of our built world. It's time to look through the lens of opportunity, to champion and scale efforts that heal the damage and produce positive ecosystem services by design. The good news is it's already happening. This report demonstrates how nature's healthy ecosystem models are setting the standard for a nature-positive circular economy. Using biomimicry methods, we are challenging ourselves to perform like local ecosystems--to build and manage lands in ways that create positive ecosystem services. It starts with measuring the ecological benefits flowing from local wildlands, then designing to return the favor. It's how the circular economy learns from nature for nature.” Explore the full report here: https://lnkd.in/du-WTHET

How does the #circulareconomy create value? In our current linear economy, valuable materials go to waste and natural systems are degraded. Instead, a circular economy, applies three principles: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature. This means designing buildings, cars, and electronics, for instance, to be used longer, reused many times, remanufactured, and in the end recycled. This keeps the resources that went into making them – the materials, energy, and people’s time – in the economy. Learn more about how a circular economy can create value below.

An economic model that allows us to thrive. Our current, linear economy - sometimes referred to as the take-make-waste economy - is a system where resources are extracted to make products that eventually end up as waste and are thrown away. Whilst this economic model once allowed abundance and prosperity, this global development was only possible by extracting finite resources and degrading natural capital to generate economic value. The way our economy functions is destroying the natural capital on which it depends. We need a #circulareconomy. Learn more about our current linear economy and the need to transition to a circular economy below.

With €575 billion of benefits on the table each year, here is a strong argument for applying our creativity and ingenuity to the challenge. At a time when Europe is under pressure from all angles, using our resources wisely through a circular economy approach in the built environment is critical. EIT Climate-KIC strongly welcomes the analysis of Ellen MacArthur Foundation and is fully supportive of bringing the circular economy principles into action.”
