How do we know what future technologies might bring? Why do we think that AI will help us / save us / destroy us? Ever wondered how meaning is attributed to emerging technologies and how these visions are constructed? In the recently published Handbook of Technology Assessment, I had the opportunity to co-author a chapter with Armin Grunwald from the Institut für Technikfolgenabschätzung und Systemanalyse (ITAS) about his approach to #HermeneuticTA. The approach understands visions of the future not as statements about a time to come later than now but as statements situated in the present and driven by current #imaginaries, hopes, fears and assumptions - and also strategic interests.
