We're very proud to announce that we've been working in partnership with Canary Wharf Group to launch a first-of-its-kind, urban oasis in the heart of the Wharf. The green haven, named Eden Dock, will have a significant positive impact on biodiversity, creating more opportunities for people to connect with nature. Cities face unprecedented challenges in balancing growth while protecting the environment. By 2050, 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. Over the last five decades wildlife populations have fallen by 69%. If biodiversity loss is to be tackled, cities need to be part of the solution. Eden Dock is a blueprint for biodiversity and habitat gain for cities around the world. To mark the launch, a living artwork, Nature Rising features over 20 living figures made of ligustrum – a flowering shrub – dotted around the dock.

Today, 75% of children spend less time outdoors than what is recommended for prison inmates. There is a sizeable gap in their connection to nature, particularly in cities and urban areas. We must bridge this gap in order to enhance children’s development and wellbeing, repairing their connection to nature and inspiring advocates of action. One way to do this is through outdoor creative play. 🌿 We’ve partnered with The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) Playful Green Planet, a new project which aims to develop ecologically thriving outdoor playrooms for 200,000 children across the UK. By visiting the Eden Project, you are helping contribute to initiatives like this, reconnecting people with nature and inspiring positive action for the planet. 🌍

The story of the Eden Project is the story of a worked-out mine that was transformed into something incredible. But it’s not the only one. Published today, 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground is a new book from the Eden Project, co-written by environmental specialist Dr Peter Whitbread-Abrutat and the Eden Project’s in-house editor, Dr Rob Lowe. Readers will take a tour of some of the world’s best examples of old mines being transformed to give the habitats and communities around them new futures. There are over 102 examples ranging from inspiring world tours of heritage and tourist attractions to wildlife habitats and new industry uses – it offers a glimpse into a promising future where the remnants of mining can be converted from a liability to an opportunity. When mines and quarries close, they shouldn’t become scars on the landscape or sources of pollution or leave their working communities on the brink of collapse. With imagination and determination, they can offer something radically different — hope. 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground is a non-profit publication sponsored by Rio Tinto, Anglo American, BHP and Newmont Corporation with the support of The Land Trust, RESOLVE and ICMM. 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground is available in the UK now 👇 https://bit.ly/3zA4NTf The book will be available worldwide from 1 September 2024. Please email [email protected] to receive further details of where to order it nearer the time.
