OneBlood, one of the largest blood donation organisations, was hit last month, exposing critical data and threatening vital healthcare services. This breach again highlights how vulnerable even life-saving institutions can be to cyber threats and the important steps necessary to prevent in happening to others in the space. I normally talk about cyber resilience but this week it’s work/career resilience, prompted by the excellent Vistage Executive Summit I attended last week. One key message was that to build resilience you should surround yourself with people in the same boat as you and network with them and learn from them. Pretty much sums up why I attend events like this, where I can network with tons of people who do a similar thing to me and gain plenty of valuable insights and lessons. This event was aimed at CEOs, but I think the advice applies to most roles in infosec/cyber. I know there are plenty of similar events for CISO’s and I’m sure there are many others aimed at most roles, so if you don’t do much networking with peers, get out and do some! I always come away glad I made the effort. Here is a pic from the event host Brad Waldron who provided a perfect mix of comedy, insights and motivation. The chart in the pic is a good reminder of why resilience is needed – life/career/business is never a straight upward line! ❄️Snowflake Data Thefts impacting Santander, AT&T, Live Nation etc. Back in June, several high profile businesses were subjected to an attack targeting environments that lacked multifactor authentication (MFA). 📰This month, we provided an update to the incident, including our best practice recommendations: 1. Create MFA and credential management policies 2. Implement network segmentation and anomaly detection to prevent unauthorised access 3. Looking for your first job in a SOC? Here are some tips: ✔   Don’t use AI in your cover letter! We are looking for humans! ✔ Always update your CV before sending it out (i.e. don’t send it if it’s a year out of date – ensure its bang up to date) ✔   We aren’t looking for a perfect fit to the job so don’t try too hard to make the CV/your experience match up perfectly and don’t overstretch here; be honest with us   The key things we are looking for are: ✔      Ability to learn quickly, i.e. we will train you, so you need to demonstrate your ability to learn quick ✔     Teamwork ✔     A passion for cyber security We are constantly recruiting SOC staff and I would say that over the last 6-12 months there seems to be a huge amount of candidates chasing the entry level positions. We usually advertise these on our website and linkedin and go to our trusted agencies to hunt for the more experienced staff. When we put entry level jobs out there, we are inundated with applications, so much so that we tend to quickly take the advert down as we can’t cope with any more applicants. So, you also need to be quick to apply as we may only post the ad for a few days! It’s tough but there are jobs out there and you can stand out from the crowd…we are looking for the right people, right fit that we can invest in. #recruitment #cyberjobs #soc #mdr
