Yesterday's Budget marks the first steps in the DWP's plan to drive up opportunity and drive down poverty “We promised change, and that is what we will deliver" - Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall ** Get Britain Working ** £240m of investment for the White Paper due this autumn will shift the DWP's focus from welfare to work, with: - a new jobs and career service, - joined-up work, health and skills plans to tackle inactivity and boost employment, - a new Youth Guarantee. ** Improving Carer's Allowance ** The earnings threshold for those with caring responsibilities will be boosted by an extra £45 per week to £196, and an independent review into overpayments will be led by Liz Sayce OBE. ** Improving Universal Credit ** Benefits will be boosted through their annual uprating and a new Fair Repayment Rate will be introduced, with 1.2 million of the poorest households benefiting by an average of £420 per year. ** Support for the cost of living ** £1bn to extend the Household Support Fund in England - with Barnett funding for the equivalent support in the devolved nations - will enable councils to continue supporting families and pensioners facing the greatest financial hardship ** Detecting and preventing fraud and error ** Measures will improve how the DWP detects and prevents fraud and error, saving £7.6bn by 2029/30, so that support can be targeted where it is needed the most. ** Retaining the Triple Lock ** The State Pension will be increasing by 4.1% from Apr 2025, providing pensioners across the country with up to £470 more than the current financial year.
