  • It’s one of those typical Scottish days where the sun can’t quite make up its mind. Humid and overcast, but I'm sure it’ll make an appearance at some point, and when it does, I’ll be outside soaking up every bit of it. I know, I know, the classic weather chat — but bear with me. Today is particularly significant for me. My eldest son, Matthew, would have been 38. He passed away from epilepsy — specifically, SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy), a condition that’s still not widely understood or researched. Matthew was just 20 when he left us on Mother’s Day in 2007. So, why am I talking about Matthew and the weather? They aren’t related, but today has me reflecting on the importance of taking each day as it comes. Just like the unpredictable weather we’ve been having here in Scotland — the sporadic sunshine, the dark and dreary days — life, too, has its ups and downs. It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned to accept the rough with the smooth, to make the most of the good days, and to find resilience and purpose even on the harder ones. I know it might sound a bit whimsical, but it's what I believe in now. Life’s unpredictability reminds me daily to do the best I can, to be kind to myself and to others, and to cherish every moment. So, for Matthew — happy birthday. I miss you every day and the possibilities that could have been. And for everyone else — let’s strive to do our best, to be kind to ourselves and others, and to make the most of every day, rain or shine. 🌦️

  • Dynamoc pricing what's your thoughts

What do you think about all the fuss over dynamic pricing? Personally, I skipped getting tickets for Oasis because I couldn’t justify standing that long for the price they were asking — and I’d be even more annoyed if I got to the front of the queue and found out the price had doubled. We all know this happens with hotels when there’s a big event in town or when airline tickets skyrocket during peak seasons, so should we really be surprised this happened on Saturday? As business owners, we often drop prices to attract new sales and engage with potential clients, but would we hike them up if there was suddenly a rush of customers? I’m not sure I’d feel right doing that — but someone I spoke to last night said they’d absolutely do it because they’re just responding to the increased demand for their product. What's your thoughts?

  • Eat Outside Day is celebrated every year on the last day of August when the summer is almost over. At this time of the year, the sunshine and warm weather encourage families and friends to enjoy a delicious meal outdoors. Whether you are a fan of a picnic with your closest friends or a barbeque on the patio with family, don’t take for granted the perfect weather that makes dining outside so enjoyable. Picnics first became popular in France around the 18th century, and barbecues or cooking on grills gained popularity in the 20th century. The people of Ancient Rome in the 18th and 19th centuries ate outdoors in public gardens. While people have been eating outside for decades, today, most eat meals indoors. The national Eat Outside Day is an opportunity to change that, even if it is just for one day. How to Celebrate Eat Outside Day Celebrating this holiday is easy. All you need to do is find a park bench, picnic table, or beautiful outdoor restaurant and enjoy your breakfast, lunch, or dinner! For a quiet night in, you can also spread a blanket on your lawn and celebrate with your family. Use #EatOutsideDay to eat all your favorite meals, snacks, and desserts outside in the fresh air.

  • I was utterly appalled. The sheer lack of compassion and understanding displayed by this woman regarding the consequences her actions would have on thousands of people and their families is beyond belief. Her so-called plan to salvage her astonishingly misguided budget seemed to involve eliminating a significant portion of the population to balance the books.

I was utterly appalled. The sheer lack of compassion and understanding displayed by this woman regarding the consequences her actions would have on thousands of people and their families is beyond belief. Her so-called plan to salvage her astonishingly misguided budget seemed to involve eliminating a significant portion of the population to balance the books. This shocking revelation is detailed in *Truss at 10: How Not to Be Prime Minister*, a 330-page critique by the distinguished political biographer Anthony Seldon, chronicling Liz Truss’s brief and chaotic 45 days in Downing Street. Thankfully, she was removed from office before she could inflict such appalling harm. It’s not often I find myself publicly expressing anger at the government, although the previous administration certainly gave me plenty to reflect on. But having survived cancer myself, and now watching my father in the late stages of his own battle, it chills me to the bone to think that anyone could deem human lives expendable in this way. https://amzn.eu/d/hazRbP6 #PoliticalOutrage #HumanLifeMatters #CompassionInLeadership #PoliticalAccountability #LizTruss #GovernmentFailure #AnthonySeldon #HealthAndHumanity #PoliticalReflections #LeadershipCrisis

  • For small charities, making the most of limited funds is crucial to success. By streamlining your admin processes, you can not only save time but also make your resources go further. My experience in working with charities has shown me that the right admin support can have a transformative effect. One of my recent successes was helping a small charity produce an effective Excel spreadsheet that enabled them to track funding opportunities. This tool helped them apply for the most appropriate funding at the right times, ensuring they didn’t miss any crucial deadlines. By researching and prioritising grants that aligned with their goals, we maximised their chances of success, all while staying organised and efficient. Working with me isn’t just about getting admin tasks off your plate—it’s about saving time, carefully using your existing funds, and ultimately creating more opportunities for your charity. If you want to explore how admin assistance can help your organisation thrive, let’s connect and discuss how I can support your mission. #SmallCharities #NonProfitSupport #FundingOpportunities #CharityAdmin #GrantWriting #ExcelEfficiency #MaximiseImpact #CharityGrowth

  • What I love about being self-employed is the freedom to set my own hours. I can take a coffee break whenever I feel like it or indulge in a long lunch without answering to anyone. If I meet my clients' expectations and deliver on my promises, the rest of my schedule is mine to control. This level of autonomy is something I never experienced while working for traditional organisations, and it has significantly reduced my stress levels. Recently, I came across a discussion that made me reflect on workplace dynamics and the role of bosses. Can employees really enjoy such flexibility without needing to constantly inform their supervisors? Imagine being able to casually say, “I’ll be late tomorrow,” or “I’m leaving early today, but I’ll finish my work in the morning,” Since the pandemic, the workplace landscape has indeed changed dramatically. The rise of hybrid and remote working opportunities is a game-changer, particularly for families and single parents. This flexibility is not only beneficial for work-life balance but also helps retain talent. However, not all industries can accommodate such leniency. The hospitality sector, for instance, is grappling with inflated cost of living and struggling to offer competitive salaries and flexible hours. It's hard to imagine a waiter stepping out during peak hours to attend a child’s football match or a dental appointment. Yet, the concept of an employee-led environment where bosses trust their staff to manage their tasks independently is intriguing. It raises important questions about modern leadership and trust in the workplace. Do you, as a manager, provide this level of autonomy to your employees? Do your employees view you as considerate and understanding? How do you balance the need for flexibility with ensuring that work gets done? Adopting a trust-based approach can be beneficial. Employees who feel trusted and valued are often more motivated and productive. They are likely to go beyond when they know their personal needs and circumstances are respected. However, this requires a fundamental shift in management style from micromanagement to empowering and supporting employees. Reflecting on these aspects can be crucial for businesses aiming to navigate the evolving work environment. The pandemic has shown that flexibility and empathy can significantly enhance employee satisfaction and productivity. As organisations continue to adapt, those that successfully integrate these principles are likely to stand out. In your workplace, how do you foster a culture of trust and flexibility? Are you comfortable giving your employees the freedom to manage their own time, and do you believe it leads to better outcomes? The balance between flexibility and accountability is delicate but essential for creating a progressive and supportive work environment. Let me know in the comments!

Last weekend, I escaped to an AirBnB in Sunderland for a special celebration—my son's 30th birthday. His amazing partner organized a party with all his siblings, myself, and my partner. The house was incredible, filled with the laughter and chaos of family—beautifully organized chaos, of course! With two granddaughters in the mix, playing with their uncle and aunties, the energy was contagious. One night, as I crawled into bed, I turned to my partner and said, "I feel like I’ve stepped back in time." He smiled and replied, "Because you have a house full of kids again?" Well, yes and no. I spent the day picking up cups, plates, cans, and putting away random food left on the counter—just like I used to when they were all under one roof. But this time, it felt different. It wasn’t about them being lazy or disrespectful. It was the comfort they felt, being back together in a space where they could just *be*. It reminded me of the happy, noisy household we once had, and how, in this moment, they were able to relax into that same rhythm. Sure, years ago, I would have kicked up a fuss over them leaving things around, but now I see it differently. Sometimes, we need to revisit our roots and appreciate what we had. It’s like a little reminder of how far we’ve come, and a gentle nudge to cherish those moments of simple, messy joy.
