This week Humberside Police has launched a powerful new campaign to encourage other victims of sexual abuse to #TellSomeone. Survivor Jamie has waived her legal right to anonymity to tell her story on camera. When she was ten years old, she was sexually abused by someone she trusted. Last year, her abuser was sentenced to 24 years in prison for nine counts of sexual assault. Jamie's story is one of trauma, hope and healing. Sikh Women's Aid have launched their bi-annual survey exploring the lived experiences of the Sikh Panjabi community on a national-scale to improve their work. The 2024 survey focuses on the prevalence and impact of domestic and sexual abuse. There will also be a specific theme exploring Spiritual Abuse and Faith-based exploitation. You do not have to have experienced any form of abuse to participate in the survey. Link to the survey in the comments below. Bravo Samantha Billingham for your unwavering commitment to shining a spotlight on the importance of domestic abuse awareness training, including how to spot the signs of coercive and controlling behaviour (CCB). Too often we still see domestic abuse ‘minimised’ to acts of physical violence - and, specifically in our area of focus, time bound incidents of violence. Understanding patterns of sustained, abusive behaviour - including CCB - is vital. Not only in the social care sector (as Sam’s campaign highlights) but across all frontline safeguarding services, including the courts. King's Lynn Minster is hosting a poignant exhibition - ‘Souls of our Shoes’ - as part of a campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse. It is hoped that the initiative will enable churches across the Diocese to open up a conversation around the subject of abuse to members of their congregations and the general public. Each pair of shoes has words from the survivor alongside it. The shoes represent the act of leaving home, and the resolve to accept that things are not going to change and the only way out is to put on a pair of shoes and walk away. In addition to the shoes, there is a display and literature on how to access support with cards that can be taken away. The exhibition will be taking place throughout August and is open daily from 8.30am– 6pm. Entry is free. A new campaign by the Naturewatch Foundation is highlighting the link between those who abuse animals and their use of violence against people. An article with the charity's campaign manager Mark Randell in Policing Insight highlights that a year ago, all police websites either directed survivors of domestic abuse where a pet was being abused to the RSPCA cruelty line, or didn’t offer any advice at all. Now, because of Naturewatch Foundation’s ‘Protect Animals. Protect People’ campaign, 93% of forces have amended that. The charity believes police officers and prosecutors should all receive mandatory training on the link between animal cruelty and domestic violence, and police forces should encourage collaboration with pet charities to share data on abuse as part of their crime prevention strategy. Reading and creative writing can help improve healing from domestic abuse, new research suggests. As part of the "Coercive Control: From Literature into Law" project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Dr Hannah Roche at the University of York and Professor Katy Mullin at the University of Leeds have worked with the Bradford-based charity Staying Put to organise a series of workshops with women with lived experience of domestic abuse and sexual violence. The group has discussed fiction and poetry by writers ranging from the Brontës to Bernardine Evaristo. The texts and extracts have helped women in the group to recognise the signs and patterns of coercive control and to process their own experiences. The reading and creative writing workshops now form part of Staying Put’s Intervention and Prevention provision for women in refuges. The workshops show how imaginative writing can serve both a therapeutic and an educative purpose, helping to prevent future abuse.
