Black donors are significantly underrepresented on the stem cell register. Currently, it is much harder for Black patients with #bloodcancer and blood disorders to find a stem cell match, should they need a potentially lifesaving transplant. 💔 “This Black History Month, we want to reclaim the narrative around health inequalities. One way we can do this is through raising awareness and educating others about the importance of joining the stem cell register,” shares Sophia, Digital Marketing Officer at DKMS UK. Here’s how you can get involved: 💬 Share your story and join the conversation ✨ Share our posts on social media to educate your community 📣 Talk to your friends, family, and colleagues about the stem cell register #BlackHistoryMonth
About us
Our mission is to provide a suitable donor for every person in need of a blood stem cell donation. Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. For many, a blood stem cell donation from a matching donor is their best chance of survival. We work towards achieving our mission by raising awareness and empowering people to register as potential blood stem cell donors, and to join our campaign by taking action in their communities, schools, and companies; working with volunteers and organisations throughout the UK to inspire and register more people. We operate in 7 countries (UK, Germany, Poland, US, Chile, India and Africa) and have registered more than 11 million potential donors. Donors registered with DKMS have given more than 95,000 second chances of life to people diagnosed with a blood cancer or blood disorder. Our worldwide search for new donors continues though as many people are still not able to find the matching donor they need.

“I was happy that registering all those years ago had come to a point where I might directly help someone,” shares stem cell donor, Paul Smith. This September, we're delighted to be working with The Voice to raise awareness about the urgent need for more Black people to join the #stemcell register. 🙌🏾 Stem cell donor Paul and the DKMS team recently connected with members of The Prince’s Trust Youth Voice programme to talk about the process of signing up. 📢 People of colour are significantly under-represented on the stem cell register, making this cause even more critical. That's why Paul, a youth development worker at The Prince's Trust, is working alongside DKMS UK to drive more awareness and action. "I can’t begin to express my gratitude at such a time, to wake up and have people and a company help you and guide you and be there for you in real life," shares Asia. ❤️ Last week, teams at NatWest in #London and #Manchester united with a powerful purpose: to recruit more people to the stem cell register, inspired by their colleague Asia's story. Asia, a 27-year-old diagnosed with blood cancer, urgently needs a stem cell transplant to survive. Finding a matching donor is particularly difficult due to her mixed heritage - half Somalian, half Moroccan. Thanks to the incredible support from the NatWest teams, over 100 people have joined the stem cell register. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to support Asia! 👏 But our work isn't done yet! Asia is still calling on more people - especially those of Somali and Moroccan heritage - to join the stem cell register. Please share this post and register at dkms.org.uk/asia_li.

We’re thrilled to share that 12.5 million people worldwide have registered with #DKMS as potential stem cell donors! 🌍💪 Here in the UK, more than 1 million people have stepped up to join the register. But our mission continues - currently, four out of ten UK patients searching for an unrelated donor still can't find a match. That’s why we need to keep adding more potential #lifesavers to the register to give more patients a second chance at life. Register with DKMS today: dkms.org.uk/register

This is the achievement of hard work by all our colleagues from entities worldwide in the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. It would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our donors, volunteers, and partners. Your dedication inspires hope for countless patients and their families. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 💗 Even though 12.5 million people sounds like a huge number, only 1% of the global population* are registered as stem cell donors. The need for more donors remains urgent, and we are committed to reaching even more people to join our life-saving cause. Register today as a potential lifesaver with DKMS. Together, we can make a difference and give patients a second chance at life. #Milestones #DKMS #ThankYouDonor #RegisterAsAStemCellDonor (*𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦)

🚨 URGENT: Asia's call for more stem cell donors! 🚨 Sign up at dkms.org.uk/asia_li and share this post to help Asia find her match. 27-year-old Asia from Manchester was going to the gym regularly, enjoying her career & social life, and even taught herself how to code! But everything changed when she was diagnosed with stage 4 blood cancer. 💔 Her only chance at cure is a stem cell transplant and sadly time is running out to find her a match. Asia's mixed heritage – half Somalian, half Moroccan – means finding a matching stem cell donor is even more challenging. "My chances are low but I have hope if we start looking now... I will have a matching donor which would and could save my life" shares Asia. Last year, Asia was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma after experiencing debilitating symptoms. She recalls: “The itching was insanity. I couldn’t sleep, I didn’t have a normal life at all for months and months. I had bruises all over my legs and my feet were all cut up. “It may sound strange, but, for me, it was actually a relief to be diagnosed because I finally knew what it was and knew I was going to get help after nearly a year of uncertainty and pain.” “What happened to me was such a shock,” she shares. “I was going to the gym twice a day, eating a balanced diet and had energy. I’ve gone from living life at 100mph to lying in a hospital bed with nothing to do but rest and hope." We need YOUR help... 🙌 If you’re aged between 17 and 55, you can register as a stem cell donor to help give Asia, and patients like her, the chance she needs to survive. 👉 Register now: dkms.org.uk/asia_li 🔄 SHARE this post to spread Asia’s story and encourage others to register too. Let’s rally together and help Asia get back to the life she loves. 💪 #BloodCancerAwarenessMonth
