Forensic engineer evidence puts the brakes on this exaggerated rally car claim... BACKGROUND  Our insured collided with a third party stationary vehicle on a country lane.    CLAIM DETAILS  We then received a large claim for vehicle damage, including extensive damage to the gearbox of the third party vehicle.    OUTCOME  The third party vehicle was a rally car and our concerns arose initially as the damage being claimed for did not appear consistent with the images taken at the scene, or with our driver’s version of events.    While the engineers advised the gearbox damage was due to the vehicle being in reverse at the time of impact, this contradicted both our insured and the third party version of events where it was stated the vehicle was stationary, with the handbrake on.     We instructed our own forensic engineer to review the evidence and provide comment on whether all damage was accident related or if it was caused from racing.    Our engineers advised the damage did not appear to be accident related as no contact had been made with the wheel which would have had a direct impact on the gearbox. In addition to this, images showed minimal damage, and no images of the gearbox were provided to support the claim.    We placed the matter with our solicitors to investigate and defend. However, because we didn’t have an insured driver to assist with further investigations and the third party vehicle had already been repaired, so we couldn’t retrieve any further images than what had already been provided, our solicitor’s advice was to make a low offer to settle the matter pre-litigation.     This low offer was accepted by the third party resulting in a significant saving of over £37,000 for our policyholder.    #ProtectingPolicyholders #FightingFraud
