We’re excited to share that the #Type1DiabetesGrandChallenge has funded three new projects to replace insulin-making beta cells in people with type 1 diabetes… 👇 The new projects take inspiration from ticks 🪲, brain cells 🧠 and tiny molecules that influence our genes 🧬: Dr Craig Beall and Dr Thomas Piers at the University of Exeter will explore whether a type of brain cell that makes insulin can be used to develop long-lasting, effective beta cell therapies for #T1D, which are resistant to the type 1 immune attack: https://lnkd.in/etTA5ZRP Dr Aida Martinez-Sanchez and Dr Prashant Srivastava at Imperial College London will investigate how tiny molecules called microRNAs change the function of insulin-making beta cells: https://lnkd.in/egZ-i6Xw Prof Shoumo Bhattacharya and Prof David Hodson at the University of Oxford will take inspiration from tick saliva to develop a defence mechanism for beta cells transplanted into people with T1D: https://lnkd.in/eKTFfkgR #Type1Diabetes #T1D #Research

A huge thank you to Sarah Bool MP for her powerful speech on diabetes at the Westminster Hall debate. 👏 Tackling diabetes stigma and investing in early diagnosis and treatment can make a vital difference to people living with diabetes, helping to spot complications early and improve lives. With just 57% of people diagnosed with diabetes receiving all of their essential checks in England, we're pleased to hear Minister Karin Smyth MP's commitment to improving access to this vital care! This #WorldDiabetesDay, let’s focus on breaking down stigma and ensuring everyone living with diabetes gets the care and support they need. 💙 Find out how you can help here: https://lnkd.in/enrdwvxb

🧟♂️ Zombies aren’t just for Halloween… did you know our cells can turn into them too? For people with diabetes, foot ulcers can be extra slow to heal. And scientists think zombie-like cells may be to blame. These zombie cells don’t die when they should and release harmful chemicals that can damage our bodies and turn surrounding cells into zombies too. We’ve funded Dr Holly Wilkinson to research if anti-ageing drugs could kill zombie cells in foot ulcers to help them heal faster and reduce the risk of more serious foot problems. 🎃 Could this be the trick to treating foot ulcers? Autumn Budget 2024 Did you watch the budget? We had a close eye on the Chancellor’s speech today as yesterday, we shared an article on what we wanted to see announced: https://orlo.uk/c7UKN So, what did we learn? 1️⃣ The government announced a £22.6bn increase to the NHS’s budget to reduce the waiting times patients currently face in getting treatment ❗ We welcome this but also urge the government to use the NHS 10-Year Plan to invest in and improve the uptake of routine diabetes care. This will give people with diabetes the support they need to live well. 2️⃣ The soft drinks industry levy (known as the sugar tax) will rise in line with inflation and a review will be done on sugar thresholds and the current exemption of milk based drinks ❗ We’re pleased to see this progress to encourage soft drinks manufacturers to produce healthier products
