Here are some thoughtful insights from Partner Andy Drane on the importance of SMEs, particularly SME housebuilders, and the struggles they face in a complicated legal and regulatory landscape. Davidson Chalmers Stewart is proud to have worked with so many clients over the past 25 years whose businesses have persevered and helped their local communities flourish. #lawyersforbusiness
The words “crisis” and “emergency” seem to be very much in vogue with politicians at the moment. We have the constitutional crisis, the climate emergency, the housing emergency, the crisis in social care, the cost-of-living crisis. Important as these are, it sometimes feels as though the way to get a particular pet interest onto the map is to declare that it’s one or the other. Unfortunately finding answers or solutions is almost always easier said than done. There is an unerring tendency of politicians of every hue to look for silver bullet answers or solutions in the hands of the very largest of organisations. However, we all know that what works in a concentrated conurbation such as Greater London or the North West powerhouse will probably not work in a dispersed rural area such as the Scottish Borders or the Outer Hebrides. In large part it’s small and medium enterprises that are left to come up with meaningful answers and solutions which are rooted in the communities where they operate. In my working life I spend much of my time working with small and medium enterprises to navigate their way through what can be a complicated legal and regulatory environment. I’ve seen firsthand, for instance, how the planning system too often mitigates against profitable development instead of supporting it. Large corporate housebuilders backed by private equity or publicly listed may be able to wait years to get a planning consent – it’s a very different thing for SME’s and yet it’s precisely those SME housebuilders who will provide good quality local jobs, work for local contractors and spend their profits into the local communities. This week (the very appropriately named) Homes for Scotland is holding #SMEhousebuilder week to highlight the role of SME housebuilders. I don’t often mention specific businesses I work with but this week my photographs showcase both the stunning town of Lauder and Lauderdale as well as some of the developments that award-winning developer, Whiteburn, is involved with. Whiteburn is Homes for Scotland’s SME House Builder of the Year 2024. It will come as no surprise, given my passion for the Scottish Borders, to hear that I’m delighted that Davidson Chalmers Stewart LLP has been able to support them in developments both in Peeblesshire and Lauderdale (both less than 30 miles from Central Edinburgh). If you’d like to know more about the housebuilding team at Davidson Chalmers Stewart please either check out the relevant section of our website (https://lnkd.in/eumrEqZ9) or reach out to me directly. We have Strategic Land specialists such as Stephanie Mackenzie and Bruce Lancaster, Planning Experts such as Jacqueline Cook, Construction experts such as Simone Young and Environmental specialists such as Laura Tainsh. #whiteburnHQ #smebuilders #hfs #deliveringmore #brownfield #ruralhousing #law #lawyer #lawyerslife #scotland #scottishborders #photography
