We are delighted to announce that West Ward, our new Acute service for men at Cygnet Hospital Harrow, is now open and accepting referrals. The opening of the ward is part of an extensive programme of renovation at the hospital to expand its emergency mental health provision in order to support more men to be treated closer to home. Along with the environmental updates, the service has embarked on a Quality Improvement Project and co-production has been at the heart of the developments. This week is SAS Week, an opportunity to celebrate the specialty and specialist doctor workforce (SAS) and raise its profile as a rewarding career and a much valued part of the health and social care workforce. During this week we would like to congratulate Dr Ali Shojaie who was recently named Cygnet’s SAS Doctor of the Year. SAS (Specialty and Associate Specialist) doctors are senior clinicians who have completed medical training but have chosen a non-training career path, focusing on delivering patient care, Dr Shojaie won his award at the recent Cygnet Annual Psychiatrists Conference and National Awards 2024 which recognised specialist doctors who demonstrate exceptional clinical skills, service development, teaching, research and leadership. Daniel, a resident at Toller Road, hadn’t been on holiday for several years, so decided he wanted to visit Blackpool for a fun-filled trip. Senior Support Workers Rodney and Kaniz travelled with him to ensure he was able to enjoy his trip. They went to the circus, Sea World and Blackpool Tower which they thoroughly enjoyed. Daniel had a fantastic time making memories.

A man with a lifelong neurological disorder has described how the support from Cygnet Brunel has ‘given him his life back’. Phil was admitted to a hospital in Swindon after suffering a seizure in a local supermarket. He spent three months in the hospital trying to recover, but treatment was having little effect. Eventually doctors referred Phil to Cygnet Brunel, our neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative rehabilitation service in Bristol. Phil was a patient there for another three months and said “being referred to Cygnet Brunel was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Read more about Phil’s story and how the team at Cygnet Brunel helped him via the link below: https://ow.ly/Tm9b50TKWmu

In April, Cygnet Lodge Brighouse was given a plot at a local allotment to restore and use. The Occupational Therapy team and service users worked together to create a plan for the plot. Popular choices included using it as a space outdoors to relax, a place to grow fruit and vegetables or to create a colourful sensory garden. Throughout the year, service users have attended the allotment at least once a week and have got stuck in with digging, planting, sanding benches, potting and watering plants. This project provides the opportunity to support service users to reintegrate into the local community, learn and develop new skills and re-engage with interests. One service user, who previously had a strong interest in gardening, shared that they felt they had reconnected with something important by going to the allotment.
