What Stratford would look like if ‘people’ and ‘planet’ were at the heart of its regeneration policy? Creative Land Trust, Purcell Architects, Grow Studios, London Borough of Newham, Unit A (University of East London), and Studio 2 (Central Saint Martins), are collaborating as part of a knowledge exchange programme set up to explore the question; What Stratford would look like if ‘people’ and ‘planet’ were at the heart of its regeneration policy? Students explore the question by taking Stratford Civic Centre as a study area and engaging with Newham's ambitious vision to place ‘people’ and ‘planet’ at the heart of public policy in the regeneration of Stratford Town Centre. Earlier in the year, LB of Newham welcomed Grow Studios, an affordable workspace and artist studio provider, into Alice Billing House, the former Stratford Firefighters’ accommodation, a listed building that remained empty for decades and was brought back to life by the Creative Land Trust with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. As part of this collaboration, students will spend the upcoming term developing designs for better uses of the South block yard and the adjacent municipal car park. In October Grow hosted a walking tour of their studios and surrounding areas in Hackney and Stratford, followed by a lecture from Purcell, LB Newham, and Fernanda Palmieri to give the students more information about ABH in relation to the Civic Campus and Stratford more broadly. Creative Land Trust is proud to be a partner in this Knowledge Exchange Partnership, the opportunities and conflicts arising from emerging creative uses and shifting demographics will become the starting point for the development of transformative strategies and interventions that can foster urban and civic life and reimagine Stratford Civic Center as a place for local people, for new social situations and new ecologies. Last week, JG Contemporary hosted an open day and workshop at The Verdean, Friary Park with the renowned artist Matt Small. Visitors had the chance to drop by and experience Matt’s impactful mosaic portraits from his ongoing project, This is England. His thought-provoking works reflect on national identity and the stories of young, second and third-generation immigrants, all crafted from recycled materials. Both events were more than just art; they were about creating connections, sparking important conversations, and inspiring positive environmental change. A huge thank you to everyone who came by, and of course, to Matt Small for sharing his extraordinary vision with us. In partnership with Peabody and Mount Anvil. Since opening our first studios in Hackney Wick in 2023, Creative Land Trust is proud to see the incredible projects emerging from these affordable creative spaces, now home to Mainyard and Cell Studios. One groundbreaking project is Resting Reef, an initiative focused on marine conservation and innovative memorial services. In September 2024, Resting Reef announced the successful launch of its pilot artificial reef in Bali, Indonesia, using memorial reef structures made from cremated ashes to combat the decline of coral reefs. This pilot is a significant step in merging ecological restoration with cultural practices, creating living memorials that support marine ecosystems and foster a deeper connection between people and the ocean. "Our studio in Hackney Wick with Mainyard has been a blessing! It is a space we can afford as a small start-up and is allowing us to develop our designs and formulations in a creative maker space." - Louise Skajem, Co-founder of Resting Reef We're thrilled to see the incredible impact that our buildings are having on artists like those at Resting Reef, and the projects they're able to develop. https://lnkd.in/e5Bhb2iA #CreativeLandTrust #ArtistWorkspace#MarineConservation #ArtAndScience

In June, we proudly opened the South Block of Alice Billing House, once home to the West Ham Fire Brigade, as artist studios for over 25 local artists. But the journey doesn't end there—exciting work is now underway to renovate the Grade II listed North Block, set to open in 2026 with additional studios and a vibrant community café. As part of this transformation, we're thrilled to showcase the work of Andy Mac Manus, a talented local artist and designer from Grow Studios artist-in-residency programme. Andy has created 12 striking painted panels for the boarded-up windows of the North Block, drawing inspiration from the building’s rich history. Each panel represents the spark that ignites creativity, a powerful tribute to the future of Alice Billing House as a creative hub. We can’t wait to see this historic space come alive as a thriving center for art and community. This project is part of a year-long engagement programme at Alice Billing House supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. https://lnkd.in/ecGrtqum #AliceBillingHouse #CreativeLandTrust #NewhamArts #ArtistStudios #CulturalHeritage #ArtInTheCommunity #AndyMacManus

What an incredible feeling, to be part of an industry coming together for change; over 4,000 artists and arts professionals have co-signed this letter to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, advocating for crucial policy changes to support the visual arts sector. Backed by notable figures like Dame Sonia Boyce, Sir John Akomfrah, and Heather Phillipson, it was developed by 24 key visual arts organisations, including DACS, and CVAN . Let’s support the arts and the creatives who shape our culture! 🎨📢 #SupportTheArts #CulturalPolicy #CreativeEconomy #CultureatRisk #ArtsAdvocacy
The UK’s visual arts sector calls for sustained support from the government to maintain its contribution to the UK's creative economy. 📢 We've joined more than 4,000 arts professionals and artists in signing an open letter to Lisa Nandy MP, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. The letter urges the government to take steps in supporting the visual arts sector, as per the recommendations of the Visual Arts Manifesto proposed by Art Fund and 23 other arts organisations earlier this year. The letter puts forward three of our key policy asks: • To ensure every school child visits a cultural organisation every year • To protect free entry to museums and galleries • To expand the Museum and Gallery Exhibition Tax Relief The letter and manifesto were highlighted by The Guardian this weekend: https://bit.ly/4gbEio9 📝 Read the letter: https://bit.ly/3ZbLavE
