#Mondaymotivation: Your community can start a co-op! 🫵 We’ve got a huge range of community co-ops within our membership at Co-operatives UK, and we can help you set up your own. Take Wedmore Village Farm for example. With a two-acre commercial market garden, one-acre campsite and a whole range of social programmes that benefit local people, they’re making a HUGE positive difference in their community. From supporting young adults with special educational needs to learn about organic agriculture, to working with the local Men’s Shed to combat social isolation, this co-op is an ✨ inspiring example ✨of what communities can achieve when they come together! To help them get started, they applied to our Business Support for Co-ops programme, supported by the Co-operative Bank. This gave them access to expert advice from Charlotte Hollins, one of the founding members of Fordhall Farm – the first community farm in the UK. 👩🌾 💬 “We had bi-weekly Skype mentoring meetings with some of the Fordhall Farm members of staff. They ran us through everything, step by step, And they were on the end of the phone and always contactable by email. They were fantastic and their communication was really great.” – Tristan Faith, Farm Manager So far they've been a huge success, and have exciting future plans to deliver fresh fruit and veg to local schools and foodbanks. 🥕 Feeling inspired? #ThrowbackThursday ✨ Six years ago, we collaborated with the incredibly talented poet @Isaiah Hull and the creative minds at Blake House Filmmakers Cooperative to produce a film... Commissioned for #CoopFortnight, it speaks to the strength of collective action and spirit of co-operation. Through Isaiah's words and Blake House's visual storytelling, we created something quite unique. Give it a watch and give us your thoughts 👇 https://lnkd.in/eAWRbZ7b

#unfunfact: Did you know that most supply teachers are paid around 40% less than full-time teachers! 😵💫 This is because 85% are supplied through private agencies that take a large cut from the money schools pay. 🤔 But what’s that got to do with co-ops? After spending 10 years lobbying the unions and government to change the situation, Niall and other members of the National Supply Teachers Network decided to set up their own supply teacher service – Proxi Education. Their aim was to improve pay and working conditions for the supply teachers in their network – so the #coop model was the perfect fit! To get Proxi off the ground, Niall and his co-founder received help from our Business Support for Co-ops programme, supported by the Co-operative Bank. This gave them access to consultancy and advice from co-operative advisor Mark Simmonds. 💬 “Mark’s help was extremely useful and his knowledge was invaluable. He took us through governance procedures, created a five-year financial forecast and signposted to a co-operative fund for start-up loans. His input was absolutely vital in getting us where we are now.” – Niall Bradely, Proxi Education. Proxi has been a huge success, placing 20 teachers in regular and adhoc work since 2023 – with 50% being paid towards the top of the pay scale. And they’ve got lots of exiting plans for the future. 🙌 Check out the full case study to learn more 👉 https://buff.ly/3M3tVVC #bethechange #fairpay #businessdonedifferenly #startabusiness #businesssupport #supportteachers #education

🐛 Meet BATCOM – a group of people who love to make compost! This co-op of self-proclaimed ‘worm nerds’ take green waste from their gardens and allotments, using it to feed their own soil. 🪱 Their composting scheme is owned and controlled by their members, meaning it grows as the community wants it to, and reflects the needs of those who nourish it. 👩🌾 👨🌾 To help make their vision a reality, Shelly and her co-founders turned to our Business Support for Co-ops programme, supported by The Co-operative Bank plc. This gave them access to support from a co-op practitioner to help them get started. 🙌 💬 “There’s a lot of information to take in when setting up a community benefit society, and to have someone to talk it through and explain things has been really valuable.” – Shelly, BATCOM Check out the full case study for more 👉 https://buff.ly/3YNf3SU 👀 Are you looking to set up a co-op?
