I've listened to some fascinating talks at the Infobip Shift Conference. However, as a #speechwriter and #presentationwriter working in the tech industry, I feel that they're often missing one thing. Pauses. Pauses are a great way to allow your audience to take onboard what you've just said, to add just the right amount of drama and to signal a change of topic or mood.

I’m a #copywriter – here’s why GenAi isn’t going to make me redundant any time soon Call me complacent there are three reasons why I don’t think GenAI is going to take away my job as a #copywriter – not yet anyway. First, it’s not yet subtle and nuanced enough. Yes, GenAI can produce some words about the life of Henry VIII or the wines of the Veneto but being a good writer is about more than that. To give you an example, I recently wrote a blogpost for a client about the future of Private Equity. GenAI will produce five trends in this sector but what it can’t handle is the fact that my client is a technology company and will therefore want an emphasis on technological innovations and solutions. Even if I specifically asked for this, GenAI’s references to tech would be clunky, obvious and in some cases irrelevant. Second, AI generated content really only has one style. As a writer I know that, depending on my client and, more importantly, the audience, I need to vary the way I write. Sometimes it has to be punchy and journalistic. Other times it might be more conversational, while on other occasions the emphasis might be on authority and gravity. GenAI can’t do this at the moment. Three, GenAI makes things up. I work extensively a copywriter for law firms and so I was interested in the case of the New York lawyers that was sanctioned last year for submitting a legal brief created by ChatGPT that included six fictitious case citations. As a copywriter and journalist, I’m careful to ensure that everything I say is factually correct. I check, check, check my facts – and then check them again. Finally, while I’m at it, I’m also a copywriter for a number of tech companies, many of whom tell me that GenAI still has a long way to go before it achieves the kind of potential that many commentators are already ascribing to it. (I wrote this myself, by the way, not with GenAI.)

What does the negative media coverage that Pret A Manger has experienced recently because of problems with its subscriber service tell us about #crisismanagement and #issuemanagement? The company has been quick to respond, and it’s offered refunds to customers which is great. But there have been very few, if any, expressions of apology and sympathy for unhappy coffee drinkers. At Communicate Media we work with restaurant chains and retailers to help them to get their crisiscommunications match fit. We always advise offering some sympathy in these difficult situations.
