We are absolutely delighted that CRT Hwb Cana has won the Community Benefit Award for Wales from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)! It’s amazing to be recognised for the benefits CRT Hwb Cana is delivering for the people of Penywaun and we could not have won this award without the support of the community which we are proud to serve. This what the judges had to say: “This small project, delivered through the charitable Coalfields Regeneration Trust, has taken a former derelict chapel in the small village of Penywaun, Aberdare and transformed it into an exemplar community asset in an area of significant depravation. The small team worked relentlessly in securing a range of funding opportunities with which to translate their vision into a reality whilst taking both the local and wider communities on every step of the journey. “The judges found the visit to the centre, meeting with some of the centre’s users, and speaking with some of its tenants – including Smart Money Cymru Community Bank which has established a base at Hwb Cana. An important element of the success of this project has been the depth and breadth of engagement with the community in order to understand their needs and ensure these were the primary deliverables from the project. Whilst not attached to their application, staff at Hwb Cana shared a detailed stakeholder engagement plan which set out the approach towards securing the faith, respect and trust of the local community. “This is a small project that is delivering results and benefits that are significant in the context of those benefitting from the support services through this initiative.” We could not do what we do without our partners – Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Welsh Government, the UK Government Wales/Llywodraeth DU Cymru, Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Interest Company and General Dynamics UK Limited and we’d like to thank them for all of their support! We’ll be representing Wales in the RICS UK Awards in the Autumn so keep your fingers crossed for us!

Building Prosperity & Opportunity: Improving work, wellbeing and community in former coalfield areas.
About us
The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is the leading regeneration organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life in Britain’s coalfield communities. We are a charitable company, governed by a board of trustees with teams deployed across England, Scotland and Wales and have been supporting these communities since 1999. Our mission: “To champion and strengthen coalfield communities, generate resources to respond to their needs and deliver programmes that make a positive and lasting difference.” We are a social enterprise and deliver services and programmes that make a positive difference in our communities. These activities are supported using our own funds or by delivering contracts for external partners. We are a social investor and develop opportunities that deliver social impacts but also a return on investment to the Trust so that we can continue to support our communities.

We were pleased to launch our State of the Coalfields 2024 report in Parliament yesterday. We'd like to thank Alexandra Davies-Jones for sponsoring our launch event which was chaired by Coalfields Regeneration Trust Chair Linda McAvan and had contributions from Professor Steve Fothergill from Sheffield Hallam University and our Chief Executive Gary Ellis. We'd also like to thank our coalfield communities MPs for supporting the launch including Owen Thompson MP, Grahame Morris M.P., Aaron Bell MP and Paul Blomfield Mp (Sheffield) A link to the report is in the comments below 👇

Today we highlight the lack of quality jobs in former coalfield communities with the launch of the State of the Coalfields 2024. There are only 57 jobs for every hundred people living in the former coalfields compared to a national average of 73 and 88 jobs per hundred people in the main regional cities according to the research from the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research at Sheffield Hallam University This lack of local jobs means people like Darren, who's from Goldthorpe and has been unemployed for five years are telling BBC Radio Sheffield he's struggling to find work. The Coalfields Regeneration Trust has been working with people like Darren for years - so our Chief Executive Gary Ellis asked to be put in touch with Darren to see what we can do to help. You can hear Darren's full story and get access to the State of the Coalfields 2024 in the links below:

Coalfields Regeneration Trust has launched our new programme CRT Together in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support. The event was a huge success in bringing together partners, professionals and people living with cancer who all share the same aims of supporting people who have a cancer diagnosis. CRT Together is all about supporting people who have been diagnosed with cancer in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board area by signposting them into cancer services to help with their emotional, practical and social needs.

We are proud of our partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support’s Helen Hughes who has played a leading role in developing CRT Together. This programme would not exist without Helen’s vision for improving the lives of people living with cancer in former coalfield communities – thank you for the support Helen!
