Join us in celebrating 15 Years of City Year UK 🎉 2024 marks our 15th anniversary. In 2009 the City Year UK pilot started with seven trailblazing young volunteers who were inspired by a simple offer: ‘Give a year. Change the world - by supporting children in your own community’. Our organisation has since expanded in the West Midlands in 2013 followed by Greater Manchester in 2015. ⭐ Since 2009, City Year UK has trained and supported over 1,800 young adults to coach and mentor over 17,000 pupils in need of extra help and contributed to a positive learning environment for over 136,000 children. 🙌 To celebrate this momentous occasion we want to share inspirational stories from across those 15 years, demonstrating the incredible impact our mentors have made in the lives of the children and young people we serve. 🚀 Have you volunteered with us in the past or perhaps have had a City Year mentor throughout school who shaped who you are today? We'd love to hear from you. 🫵 🔗Head to our website to find out how you can get in touch with us and share your City Year story: https://lnkd.in/euCKe6Vk #CityYearUK #15Years #15thAnniversary #VolunteerImpact #MentoringMatters #EducationMatters #MakeADifference #InspiringStories #CelebratingSuccess

Tackling educational inequality through voluntary mentoring
About us
City Year UK is a youth and education charity which empowers diverse 18 to 25-year-olds to tackle educational inequality through a year of full-time volunteering in schools. Our vision is of a society where the transformative power of full-time social action in schools is an integral part of growing up in the UK; supporting every child and young person to achieve their full potential. City Year mentors inspire, coach and tutor children of all ages to overcome social, emotional and academic barriers to learning and, by realising pupils’ potential, realise their own. Often volunteering in their own communities, they gain real world experience, standout skills and new networks that will set them up for any career. City Year UK's volunteers are integral to the school day. They encourage pupils both in and out of the classroom to engage with and enjoy learning, while developing their own skills. Our volunteers benefit from additional training, delivered by experts from across the education, business and voluntary sectors. City Year was first established in Boston, Massachusetts in 1988 and operates in 27 cities across America, as well as Johannesburg in South Africa. City Year UK launched in London in 2010 and has since expanded to the West Midlands and Greater Manchester.

Supporting the local food banks for Social Action Day. 💙🤝 City Year Mentors in Team Changemakers recently volunteered at Burnage Foodbank for their social action project. ⭐ They took on the challenge of reorganising the foodbank’s storage space to make food donations more accessible, efficient, and ready to serve the community. Their incredible efforts will go a long way in helping the foodbank support individuals and families in need, during times of hardship.🙌 🔗Head to our website to learn more about social action work at City Year UK: https://lnkd.in/eB4Uqen5 #SocialAction #FoodBank #CommunitySupport #CityYearUK #VolunteerWork #FoodDonations #SocialImpact

Getting into the Halloween spirit 🎃 Alongside supporting them in the classroom, City Year Mentors are always trying to find new ways to make the school environment fun and engaging for their students. 🙌 Team Nala mentors over in Bamford Primary did exactly that by dressing up and throwing a fun trick-or-treat themed activity for the school’s pupils. 🍬👻 What are you dressing up for this Halloween? For #BHM24, City Year Mentor Koyinsola has written a piece for our blog, about her experiences of being black in education. 🙌 Koyinsola’s fantastic and informative piece touches on how schools can be more inclusive and how the education system excludes black voices, which touches on the theme of this year's Black History Month, #ReclaimingNarratives. 🔗Head to ourwebsite to read the piece on our website: https://lnkd.in/eTsBwBiZ #BlackHistoryMonth #InclusiveEducation #DiversityInEducation #BlackVoices #EducationMatters #EmpowerBlackVoices #CulturalAwareness

City Year UK reposted this
This week we brought together UK Year of Service providers past and present to discuss the future of the programme. We were joined by Stephen Greene and Lord Blunkett, our national partner NCS - National Citizen Service Trust and one of our UK Year of Service alumni, Will. Will worked for Rewriting Earth during his placement and over two years later is still there! He said "UK Year of Service was an inspiring experience to collaborate with a diverse group of young people from across the UK, each bringing different skills and perspectives." The essential skills Will developed during the programme have led to sustaining a full time job and lots of exciting opportunities, including managing projects and campaigns, gaining line management experience and even attending COP27 in Egypt. Thanks to Volunteering Matters British Red Cross Flying Futures C.I.C City Year UK Groundwork UK for sharing their insights and expertise - we look forward to continuing to engage with our wider provider network in the coming months.

City Year UK Social Action Day 2024 🚀 Last week our mentors participated in their Social Action Day—a yearly event where our mentors are encouraged to develop a charitable project to tackle different social issues within their communities. ⭐ City Year Mentors across our 3 sites were hard at work, putting their efforts into a variety of inspirational Social Action Projects and we couldn’t be more proud! 🙌 We can’t wait to share a bit more about the work they’ve done. 😄 🔗Head to our website to learn more about social action work at City Year UK: https://lnkd.in/eB4Uqen5

Back in early October, we were delighted to welcome 15 #ArdianVolunteers to Weavers Adventure Playground as part of the Ardian Global Citizens Day, where they took part in a day of volunteering to create beautiful murals, storage carts and sandwich boards for the centre in Bethnal Green. 🌟 Despite the rain, the Ardian volunteers had a fantastic and eventful day working alongside our CY Mentors. We were so pleased to see their creations take shape and know that they will have a great impact for Weavers Adventure Playground and the children who use the centre! 🛠️ Huge THANK YOU to Ardian for their dedication and hard work! 🔗Head to our website to find out how our mentors are making an impact in their school communities: https://lnkd.in/emwJdwqC

City Year UK provides you with the opportunity to develop your skills and reach your potential. 📈 When joining our programme last year, former City Year Mentor Akanksha said that public speaking was one of the primary areas she wanted to develop. This year as a graduate of City Year UK, Akanksha delivered an inspiring talk to our new City Year mentors at their Red Jacket Ceremony. 🙌 Akanksha is one of many inspiring individuals who used their time at City Year UK, to succeed in meeting their personal goals. ⭐ 🔗Head to our website or message us to learn how City Year UK can help you unlock your potential - https://lnkd.in/e2dtXezr #Mentorship #PersonalDevelopment #PublicSpeaking #YouthEmpowerment #ProfessionalGrowth #InspiringStories

October is ADHD Awareness Month! 🌈🦋 Did you know around 1 in 20 young people in the UK has ADHD? Students with ADHD are 3 times more likely to struggle academically, and up to 40% may experience exclusion from school. At City Year UK our mission is to help young people overcome barriers to learning by supporting them within schools. We believe that increasing the awareness and understanding of ADHD can help ensure that every student gets the right support they need for the best education possible. 🙌 Let’s work together to create inclusive classrooms where all young people can thrive! 💪📚 Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA) 🔗Head to our website to learn how we’re supporting young people in education: https://lnkd.in/eW7tJxcC #ADHDAwareness #CityYearUK #SupportYouthEducation #EducationForAll #Neurodiversity #MentalHealthAwareness #ADHDSupport
