Tackling educational inequality through voluntary mentoring

About us

City Year UK is a youth social action charity which challenges 18 to 25-year-olds to tackle educational inequality through a year of full-time voluntary service. As mentors, tutors and role models in schools, they support pupils growing up in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK. The City Year experience empowers these exceptional and diverse young people to realise their aspirations and grow as leaders, both through their impact on children’s lives and through training, coaching and career development opportunities. City Year UK's volunteers are integral to the school day. They encourage pupils both in and out of the classroom to engage with and enjoy learning, while developing their own skills. Our volunteer mentors benefit from additional training, delivered by experts from across the education, business and voluntary sectors. City Year was first established in Boston, Massachusetts in 1988 and operates in 27 cities across America, as well as Johannesburg in South Africa. City Year UK launched in London in 2010 and has since expanded to the West Midlands and Greater Manchester.

When he started Year 10, Marco was often distracted at school, meaning that he didn’t always pay attention in class, leaving him feeling frustrated and angry. He had given up on himself and his education and had no aspirations or hope for his future. Like Marco, around 30% of children in the UK - 9 in an average school class of 30, or 4.2 million in total - are growing up in poverty, in households earning less than £400 per week, putting them at high risk of having mental health struggles, and five times more likely than their peers to experience poor educational outcomes.  Long-term, this leads to a lack of confidence,  low aspirations, and ultimately unemployment - with these children being 50% more unlikely to transition into further education, employment or training when leaving school as young people at the age of 18. But it doesn't have to be this way. At City Year UK we’re working tirelessly to ensure that the next generation - our future leaders - are equipped to succeed and thrive in school, employment and life, no matter what their background or circumstances. We do this by placing volunteers, aged 18-25, into schools across Greater Manchester, West Midlands and London to act as Mentors to children who are struggling. These Mentors give the children the support they need to thrive socially, emotionally and academically, while they themselves build the skills, resources and networks needed to pursue a fulfilling future. This year, we are celebrating our 15 year anniversary. And we are doing this with a pledge to reach over 21,500 children and young people by August 2027. But we can’t do this alone. Help us reach more young people and give them the chance to realise their full potential. Please make a donation today and share with your network so that more young people like Marco can look forward to more hopeful futures: cityyear.org.uk/donate Thank you for your support! 🙏🌱🌟 #cityyearuk #educationcharity #cityyear15years

City Year Mentor Journeys is a short video series showcasing the transformative journeys that our mentors undergo during their year of service with us. 🚀 Today we wanted to draw attention to Bill one of our mentors from our recent 23/24 cohort. ⭐ Before starting his City Year journey Bill referenced his sister as the figure who constantly set the example for him. At the end of Bill’s time with City Year, while he had become that inspiration for others, he recounts that he felt he still needed that same guidance when it came to navigating his future beyond his time as a CYUK mentor. Bill was wading the murky waters of post-graduation life, entering the exciting but daunting stage of kick-starting his career. Through the guidance and support of his Bridge Builder Mentor, Bill was able to unlock his confidence and find the right pathway for him. Consequently, Bill secured a role in the school he mentored in. Bill’s story highlights a different side of our mentor's journey, while they are incredible forces of impact in the lives of others they also undergo a massive transformative journey themselves. From the start of the programme, whether through mentorship from our Bridge Builder Programme or the skills-building tools we offer them, our mentors build their confidence to kickstart their own exciting futures. 🔗Want to Kickstart your career and build the necessary skills for your future? National Volunteering Manager at Riding For The Disabled Association

I have been actively volunteering throughout the entirety of my adult life and I often reflect on those experiences. One that continues to stand out is my year of full-time voluntary service with City Year UK 🇬🇧 Despite the challenges— also working night shifts as a bouncer, balancing a premiership rugby career, & navigating my early diagnosis journey— this year remains one of the best of my life. The reason? Not only did I impact the lives of others, but the whole experience impacted me in ways I couldn’t possibly imagine & that was largely down to the organisational culture at City Year. Here’s what I learned & loved: 👊🏽 Empowerment of Young People: City Year believes in the power of young people to create change. They actively dismantle the stereotype that 18-25 year olds are uninterested and uncommitted to volunteering. ❤️ Red Jackets as Identity: The iconic Red Jacket symbolises your belonging to a community of people committed to making impactful & lasting change. This extends across the world to City Year & City Year South Africa too- where I was lucky enough to also volunteer 🇿🇦 💬 Personal Dedication: When receiving your Red Jacket, you dedicate it to a cause that inspires you, your “why” that guides your actions & acts as powerful reminder of why we do what we do. 💡 Practical Idealism: City Year instills practical skills that empower us to imagine, recruit, transform and inspire. 🧱 Founding Stories: a collection of works from different cultures - the foundations for our collective mission ~ Ubuntu ❤️ 🔐 Personal Mission Statement: we defined who we wanted to be as leaders & role models, throughout & beyond our time at City Year. 🌟 PITW's: A collection of 99 ‘notes to self’ reminding us of our purpose and inspiring us to keep pushing forward. 👐🏽 Silent Applause: Embracing a practice from BSL, silent applause lets the audience express appreciation & solidarity without interrupting speakers. 💙 Morning Circle: dedicated time to share joys, ripples of inspiring actions & appreciations for one another. 🚀 WYPIIWYGO (whippy-why-go): “What you put in, is what you get out” an essential principle that reinforces the value of active participation. 👞 Moccasining: a reminder about "walking in the shoes" of others, promoting compassion in our interactions. Upon completing the programme in 2017, I wrote “these experiences have shaped me as a person & will stay with me for a very long time. I wanted to change these kids lives, but they have changed mine” - 7 years later, this still remains true (my full reflection from at the time in photos). The lessons I learned at City Year have not only shaped how I volunteer but also how I approach others areas of my life. Volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it's about growth, inspiring change & believing in the potential for better. If you’re working with young people aged 18-25 in London, Manchester or Birmingham, take a look ⤵️ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eq4zdfNa
