Season's greetings to all from King's College London.
The Centre for Sustainable Business at King's Business School is an inclusive and forward-thinking hub dedicated to addressing one of the most pressing questions in modern business: "How can businesses effectively transition to socially and environmentally sustainable practices?" While the past two decades have seen a wealth of research on the 'why' of sustainable business, the Centre pivots towards a solution-driven approach, focusing on the 'how.'

📐 How do we measure sustainability? A big thank you to Assistant Professor Matthew Archer for joining us last week from Maastricht University to discuss his book and present a talk on sustainability reporting. At the event, Matthew highlighted key arguments from his book ‘Unsustainable: Measurement, Reporting, and the limits of Corporate Sustainability’, which explores how corporate and financial actors seek to make sustainability metrics business-friendly. The event, open to all students, staff and the public, was co-hosted with Dr Pauline Destree, Lecturer in Business Ethics and Sustainability at King's Business School (KBS), as an opportunity for students to meet the author of one of the books they’re studying. Well done also to our three second-year students who volunteered to form a panel; thank you to Annabelle, Demir and Remy for asking Matthew such thoughtful questions and sparking an energetic discussion within the room. Thanks to all who attended and helped this event happen, including: Siavash Alimadadi, Catherine Tilley, Shalen Fu, Rosie Clemo, Ai-Peri D. and Suchita Hariharan. (And apologies for those joining us online – there were technical challenges during the first half of the online event!) #Sustainability #SustainableBusiness #SustainabilityData #DataReporting King's Climate & Sustainability
How can we accelerate action to address modern slavery? To mark Anti-Slavery Day, Dr Gabriela Gutierrez-Huerter O chaired a roundtable to discuss the barriers we face in ending modern slavery. In this article, Dr Gutierrez-Huerter reflects on some of the most pressing issues discussed at the roundtable, including: - 🏙️ the complexity of the issue - ✏️ the lack of pressure from regulators and clients - 💫 the decoupling of policies between the organisational and site level. On Thursday, November 28th, the ESCP Business School Berlin’s ESCP STAR Centre joined forces with the King's College London Centre for Sustainable Business (CSB) to host the 4th STARbowl Event: Digitalisation for Sustainability. The event was led by ESCP STAR Center Founder Prof. Florian Lüdeke-Freund and CSB Center Founder Prof. Jonatan Pinkse, who provided eye-opening academic models and framing around the topic. They were joined by industry experts Stephan König, Group Corporate Responsibility at Deutsche Telekom, Tomas van der Heijden, CEO and Co-Founder of Briink, and Erik van Buuren, Founder of SDiD who all delivered insightful perspectives on the real-world impact of AI and digital tools in sustainability. 🎯 Key takeaway: - Digital technologies present great opportunities for Sustainability practitioners, but they need to be used mindfully and prudently, their effects, benefits and challenges carefully examined, studied, and understood. - AI's transformative potential in driving sustainability—by enabling efficiency, reducing waste, and supporting renewable innovations—must be balanced against its unintended 'butterfly effects,' as even well-intentioned applications can generate significant environmental and social challenges. - When leveraging digital technologies for data processing and decision-making, it is imperative to prioritize human values, ensuring that data-driven approaches remain grounded in empathy and ethical considerations. A warm thank you to all the participants who managed to join the event and drive sustainability transformation forward with their passion, motivation, engagement, and dedication. Stay tuned for expert videos and interviews from the event on the ESCP STAR and Centre for Sustainable Business channels. Special thanks to the respective ESCP STAR and CBS teams who put in the effort, expertise, creativity, networking and energy to prepare, organise and produce the event for the benefit of the wider public. We're building international partnerships to help tackle vital challenges (and opportunities!) like AI in business ⭐ Last week, our team travelled to the ESCP Business School in Berlin for the event; 'Digitalisation for Sustainability', hosted in partnership with the industry-leading ESCP STAR Centre. The evening was kick-started by Anastasia Shevchenko, Director of Development at ESCP STAR, followed by their co-founder, Professor Florian Lüdeke-Freund, and our Research Director, Professor Jonatan Pinkse. Together, they opened the event with the question of how businesses can use the power of AI and digital technology to advance more sustainable practices, and what intended and unintended consequences there might be. Professor Pinkse presented his work on 'The Butterfly Effect for Sustainability', a new model for businesses to help them leverage AI and reduce tech-related risks, followed by insights from industry experts Stephan König (Deutsche Telekom), Tomas van der Heijden (Briink), and Erik van Buuren (SDiD.eu). The room was packed with passionate tech experts, sustainability professionals, academics and students, all keen to discuss the real-world impact of advanced technology in business and drive transformation. From the group discussions, there was one common theme: 🗝️ AI can revolutionise the journey towards a more sustainable world - but, with great power, comes great complexity, and many unknown consequences. Thank you to everyone for bringing such energy and enthusiasm to the event, including our PhD Student Asma Othman and Communications Officer Rosie Clemo, plus our interview volunteers (videos coming soon!) Jessica Camus, Nanxi XU, Oliver West and Dr. Wilhelm Mirow. Finally, a huge thank you to our excellent hosts Anastasia, Florian and the whole team at ESCP Business School for making us feel so welcome. We look forward to working with you to help shape the future of sustainable business 👏 Fantastic photos by: Miguel Angel Cano Santizo at Mr. Challenge Films. #SustainableBusiness #DigitalisationForSustainability #Sustainability #SustainableAI King's Business School
