When reports of airstrikes in Khartoum and East Darfur emerged online in August, a number of pro-SAF social media accounts celebrated the incidents, encouraging ethnic violence. Many of these posts claimed that the airstrikes were a legitimate response to RSF shelling elsewhere in the country, and called for the SAF to increase their efforts. CIR’s Sudan Witness identified a wave of social media posts containing misinformation, hate speech, and inflammatory language while monitoring Sudan in August. 𝗠𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 save the date 👇 𝟭 - 𝟭𝟱 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 Next month, Myanmar plans to conduct a national census during the ongoing conflict and violence in the country, which has persisted since the military coup in 2021. The census is being framed as preparation for next year's planned election, though some observers have raised concerns about its legitimacy. Meanwhile, an estimated 18.6 million people urgently require humanitarian assistance, including six million children, according to the UN. Reporting from Sudan has been difficult due to safety risks to journalists and activists. But fortunately, there is a lot of evidence online. In collaboration with The Guardian, CIR’s Sudan Witness project verified footage in the Western region of Darfur that appears to show Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters torturing prisoners and glorifying burned homes: https://lnkd.in/ewaAVy8P These men are not hiding what they’re doing - they are proudly recording themselves for the world to see. In August, the Taliban published new laws that prohibit women from speaking or showing faces outside their homes. These laws effectively bar female journalists from broadcasting. “Without female journalists, hearing from women in Afghanistan will become increasingly difficult,” writes Zahra Nader, founding editor-in-chief of Zan Times, a women-led, investigative newsroom covering human rights violations in Afghanistan. Growing up with stories of women who lived under Taliban rule in the 1990s, when the group seized power for the second time, Zahra found a way to resist the Taliban from outside the country. She would use words. Read her latest piece for The Globe and Mail where she explains how Zan Times works to find ways for Afghanistan’s female journalists to continue reporting: https://lnkd.in/eHwz44Xq CIR’s Afghan Witness collaborated with Zan Times to create a live portal of arrests, disappearances and killings of women with public roles in Afghanistan.
