🚨 Worth reading this, as this week the UK Government confirmed the introduction of a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) in the UK from 1 Jan 2027. ⚠️ This will cover imports of aluminium, cement, fertiliser, hydrogen, iron and steel (with glass and ceramic likely to follow at a later date). Applying CBAM is not really a carbon footprint exercise, but much more a supplier engagement thing. ℹ️ You need pretty specific data from suppliers against each inbound shipment. 💷 And, if you want your CBAM liability to decrease, you are going to need your suppliers to decarbonise. #cbam #carbon #supplychain

Julia Hoggett DBE, CEO of the London Stock Exchange, opened proceedings, followed by our first keynote speaker, Javier Echave, Chief Operating Officer of Heathrow, who joined Jane Goodland, Group Head of Sustainability at LSEG, to discuss how progressive Boards use sustainability data to support effective strategic decision making. We also welcomed Jack Roper, Group Head of Sustainability & Reputation Strategy at Legal & General for a second fireside chat with Claire Dorrian, Head of Sustainable Finance for LSEG Markets, to discuss the role of sustainability data in risk management. The rest of the day featured panel sessions with expert sustainability practitioners to discuss important topics such as: how investors receive and use reported data, how to understand materiality, how to ensure data is ‘investment grade’ and the evolution of international standards and regulation. We rounded off the day with a ceremony to mark the closing of the London Stock Exchange’s Markets. This week marks the launch of the UN Biodiversity #COP16 Conference, the first COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF. Good first day yesterday as part of Grow London Global’s trade mission to Dubai. Day started with an early morning introductory session where all companies selected got to know each other and had chance to hear from and question the Deputy Mayor of London, Howard Dawber. Then it was on as a delegation to the Expand North Star conference at Dubai Harbour where CEN Group was selected to present how we are supporting clients through the use of our Cascade Assessment Tool to identify and prioritise sustainability actions to a variety of corporates, partners and investors. What is clear is that the region is on the cusp of undergoing a sustainability transformation. With so much development, countries are conscious of ensuring that they are building economies fit for the future. The UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy designed to act as a stimulus economic and societal advancement by leading the way to net zero emissions. This Government target is also seeing the ripple effect into the way businesses are thinking about sustainability. In this report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that nearly 70 countries that collectively account for 80% of global renewable power capacity are poised to reach or surpass their current renewable ambitions for 2030. 🌏 The world is set to add nearly 3x more renewable energy capacity between 2024 and 2030 than the increase seen between 2017 and 2023. 🌿 Renewables are on course to generate almost half of global electricity by 2030. ☀Solar PV will account for 80% of that new renewable energy capacity. 💰 Wind and solar PV are already the cheapest options to add new electricity generation in almost every country. These are big and bold numbers, but for balance, the "nearly 3x" falls short of the goal set by nearly 200 governments at COP28 in December 2023, which was to triple the world’s renewable capacity this decade. And some of that generation is not being put to good use - curtailment rates are rising as grids are not always flexible enough to integrate variable renewable sources.
