Making a better life for cats, because life is better with cats

About us

At Cats Protection we’re here for every cat. At the forefront of research on cat welfare, we use our decades of experience to support cat owners to keep their pets happy, healthy and safe. From creating a cat-friendly home, to understanding their behaviour, to fostering cats for anyone fleeing domestic abuse. We know that, for many people, their cat is part of the family. So our trained volunteer listeners are here to support anyone who’s dealing with the heartbreak of their cat’s death, a cat who has gone missing or difficult issues like euthanasia. We also offer cat owners peace of mind that, if they should pass away themselves, we’ll look after their cat and find them a loving new home. Helping people understand their cats better means we can often avoid the need for owners to give up their pets. But when rehoming is the right thing to do, we look after cats with care and kindness, and help them find a loving new place to stay. We campaign to make sure cats are not forgotten by decision makers, speaking out on issues like kitten smuggling and cat theft. And we run the world’s largest single-species neutering programme, for both pets and feral cats, to support a healthy and balanced cat population. Whatever it takes, we’re here for cats and the people who care for them. Making a better life for cats, because life is better with cats.

Cats Protection is refreshing its brand, supporting the charity’s strategy to make life better for millions more cats. For almost 100 years, we have been here to help cats and support the people who care for them. Now, we want to do much more, reaching many more cats directly and importantly, changing people’s understanding of and attitudes towards cats. That means we need many more people to know about us, support us and use our services. By making our brand more appealing and building our reputation as experts in all things cat, we will be able to reach and support many more people with our information and advice. By helping people to think and act differently towards cats, we can promote positive relationships between cats and people, prevent cruelty and mistreatment and reduce the need for rehoming. And by sharing our research and thought-leadership, we can positively influence policy to make the UK a better place for cats and the people who care for them. We are launching the new brand with our biggest ever fundraising campaign, which focuses on one of our most important areas of work: Cats Protection Lifeline, our cat fostering service which provides a temporary, loving home for cats whose families are fleeing domestic abuse. It’s common for perpetrators to target cats and kittens too. So for many people, leaving them behind isn’t an option. But most refuges can’t accept pets. We look after cats until their owners are able to take them back safely. That gives them a chance to get away from abuse and get back on their feet, knowing that they’ll be together again soon. Our campaign tells the story of a little girl and her cat. Ava and Mr Biggles are everything to each other, but when Ava and her mum have to leave their home to escape domestic abuse, they can’t take Mr Biggles with them. The campaign film, which will be shown on Channel 4, was created by the agency Luke Charles, produced by FLIPT, and directed by Duncan Christie. For support and information on domestic abuse contact Refuge’s National Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247.

Our UK Cat Centre, formerly known as the National Cat Adoption Centre, is celebrating 20 years since it opened in 2004! Over the past two decades, the centre and its veterinary clinic located at Chelwood Gate, Haywards Heath, have helped cats from all over the country and successfully found homes for over 20,000 cats and kittens. Our UK Cat Centre Manager Danielle, said: "It's been an absolute privilege to have played a part in what the Centre has achieved over the last 20 years, none of which could have been possible without the passion, hard work and dedication of all the Centre staff and volunteers, both past and present." #CatsProtection #AllForCats

Earlier this month, the Education team supported the Pet Education Partnership to deliver their third live event as part of World Animal Day. The Pet Education Partnership is a collaborative initiative between the UK’s leading animal welfare organisations, to provide animal welfare education to all children in the UK aged five to 11. The session, themed 'Animals - It's Their Home Too,' focused on teaching younger children how to make their pets' homes more exciting and engaging through enrichment activities. Participants discovered creative, cost-effective, and sustainable ways to use recycled household items to enhance the environment for pets and wildlife. The Zoom session was attended by over 6000 children from across the UK and also featured video content from social superstars Max and Harvey, and JB Gill. #CatsProtection #AllForCats

Happy Black Cat Day! 🖤😺 Black Cat Day was launched in 2011 to shed light on a concerning statistic: black and black-and-white cats took an average of seven days longer to find a home compared to cats of other colours. Years later, our campaigning has paid off! Black and black-and-white cats now spend less time in our care, resulting in thousands of happy cats and owners. Join us in celebrating the majesty of monochrome moggies and beautiful black cats by sharing your cat in the comments below! 📸🖤 #BlackCatDay #BlackCat #BlackAndWhiteCat #CatsProtection

Our Winter 2024 campaign, Here for Every Cat’s Journey, has officially launched! This week we aired our powerful new TV ad, highlighting the heartbreaking increase we’ve seen in the number of cats being abandoned this year.
