Carmody Groarke is a London-based architectural practice founded in 2006 by Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke. The practice has developed a reputation for working internationally on a wide range of arts, cultural, heritage and residential projects. Carmody Groarke have designed critically acclaimed buildings including Windermere Jetty Museum, a Temporary Museum for Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House, the V&A Members’ Room and Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre Clatterbridge. The studio has designed projects for clients including artist Antony Gormley, British Land and the Royal Academy of Arts. Current projects include the Design Museum in Gent, a gallery space for temporary exhibitions in a Grade II listed building in Manchester, housing in Milan and a new international arts venue at Park Hill, Sheffield. The practice has earned international recognition, winning several architectural competitions and awards for completed projects. Two monographs of the practice’ work have been published by the world renowned El Croquis and 2G.

#ONSITE A closer look at the new galvanised steel extension at 469 Bethnal Green Road. The facade, made from over 500 hot-dipped galvanised steel plates is designed to unify the existing masonry base with the new extension, creating a distinctive addition to Bethnal Green Road. Due to open in early Autumn, the building will provide new creative workspaces in the heart of East London. The project is featured in this year’s Open House Festival. As part of a broader masterplan, our proposals for the #TrumanBrewery focus on the sensitive redevelopment of the Cooperage Building and the design of a new creative workspace. The masterplan aims to further the evolution of this historic site by opening up the courtyard for improved urban connections and providing adaptable workspaces, vibrant retail environments, art spaces, and a micro-brewery on the east side of the site. Associate Director Lukas Barry recently spoke to Tom Larsson, Grow Places and Dominique Staindl, South Facing, discussing the unique challenges and wider creative opportunities within the site and our approach to heritage, conservation and environmental sustainability. #ONSITE Design Museum Gent Our work at Design Museum Gent includes the sensitive restoration and transformation of three existing buildings within the museum’s masterplan in addition to a new museum wing. The existing buildings include Hotel De Coninck, a grand former hotel dating back to the 17th century containing most of the museum’s historic collection, Huis Deleu (Leten) a traditional Gentian town house accommodating the museum’s administrative staff, and Wing 1992, a contemporary part of the museum built in the early 90s by architect Willy Verstraete providing large open plan exhibition spaces. In partnership with architects ATAMA and #RE-ST, we are upgrading these buildings to create optimal display conditions and provide much-needed visitor facilities and accessible circulation for the first time. Our reuse strategy focuses on retaining as much of the existing buildings as possible, including the historic façade facing the central courtyard. Where demolition has taken place, we are reusing waste materials within the new museum building currently being constructed on site. The new building will be knitted into the existing ensemble of historic buildings, creating new space for temporary exhibitions and events. #LFA During the London Festival of Architecture, we hosted two events focusing on this year’s theme, ‘reimagine’. In collaboration with Dulwich Picture Gallery and play designers Stephanie Jeffries and Sarah Marsh, senior architect Chiara Barrett discussed the role of architecture and creative play in reframing cultural collections. This included our joint project, the Children’s Picture Gallery, set within the gallery gardens. Later, we welcomed aspiring architects and local students from Mossbourne Community Academy into the studio for a half-day model-making workshop. Led by Joe and Eve from our British Library team, the workshop gave students the chance to develop their creative and critical skills by reimagining our proposal for the new archive building at the library’s Boston Spa site. We enjoyed participating in the festival and sharing our work and approach to architecture with such a broad range of audiences.

#ONSITE Documenting the construction of the new archive building for the British Library, Boston Spa. Around 75% of the British Library’s collection is stored in their site at Boston Spa, West Yorkshire, originally a Second World War munitions factory. The new automated storage building, comprising a Logistics Hub and storage void, will provide 225 linear km of additional capacity, providing space for the British national print collection to grow. A state-of-the-art automated robotics system will be used for retrieval and logistics, and will be housed within a low-energy airtight envelope. A public viewing gallery within the building will allow visitors to see the archive in action, revealing the secrets of collection care and placing the visitor experience at the heart of the project. The building’s primary steel structure is now complete, showing the volume of the interior spaces including the public viewing gallery. The construction of the storage building and workspace is due to be completed next year.
