𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 #𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟳-𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Choosing a role in Finance is frustrating😤. I know. During my 10 years in Finance, I struggled a lot whenever I was at a crossroads. Moving from #banking to corporate Finance to treasury and investor relations was painful. My unfortunate experience had an unexpected upside. I learned how to choose jobs in Finance without stress. ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 #𝟏 - 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Your past accomplishments say something about who you are. Draw a career timeline and jot down all the ups and downs. Reflect on what you loved, as you want to include those elements in your new job. Reflect on what you hated, as it didn't work for you. ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 #𝟮 - 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 Which of your values were met during the ups of your career? What were the needs that were left unfulfilled during the downs? Let values and needs inform your decision. ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 #𝟯 - 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 Run an audit of your finances and assess how much money you need to sustain yourself. When your work is meaningful to you, you get promoted faster. If you need to take a salary cut, it might be an investment in your future. ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 #𝟰 - 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 Most jobs in Finance require transferrable skills, e.g., numerical, presentation, time management, stakeholder management, etc. Think out of the box to see the links between your current role and the next one. Once you can see them, the hiring manager will see them, too. ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 #𝟱 - 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 & 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 Do your homework. What are the typical exit opportunities for someone in your role? You are not the first to make a change; don't trust me. Trust Google. Who in your network has the job that you fancy? It might be the right time to chat with them. ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 #𝟲 - 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝘁 After you have pondered all the optimal alternatives, follow your gut instinct. The limbic system in your brain collects all the knowledge you acquire. It's strictly connected with your gut. Trust it. ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 #𝟳 - 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳! Create an exciting story about your pivot. Show your eagerness on your CV, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and social media. Everybody loves passionate people working hard to get what they want! ----- #careercoach #investmentbanking #jobsearch Finance Career Coach | Career Coach For Finance Professionals

#Banking and #Finance professionals, are you worried about making the wrong career transition? I was terrified of making a career transition from Treasury to Investor Relations... This is what I wish I had known... Making a #careerchange or a #careerpivot is scary. I did both. However, both times, I was so worried about changing that I underestimated the benefits. These are the 5 things I wish I had known before changing my career. 𝟭. 𝗜 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘆 A great career is one where you are, what you believe in, and what you do are aligned. I am still amazed by how happy I am with my new career. I didn't think it was possible to feel alive every single day. I have bad days like everybody, but I always align with my purpose. 𝟮. 𝗠𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 Before quitting, I was terrified of everything that could go wrong. I analyzed and prepared for anything. Guess what? I have made it OK. The voice in your head telling you that you will fail is fear talking. 𝟯. 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘆 My brain opened as I faced my fears and learned like never before. When you move towards a new career, you give yourself a chance to be a learner again. It's awesome! 𝟰. 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 My productivity skyrocketed once I aligned my career with who I am. Having the flexibility of working when and where I want motivates me. Consequently, I work much more and much better! 𝟱. 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 I have noticed that my overall life has improved. I have been so attentive to what's suitable for me that I have experienced a spillover effect over other areas of my life. Are you feeling stuck in your career and considering a career transition? #Finance and #Banking professionals, here is how to land a job ASAP... [MUST READ] Everyone does it, but NOBODY talks about it... Let's be honest. Job hunting is painful. I always felt like I was in a washing machine... Applying, interview prep, wait, "Thank you, BUT..." Rinse and repeat for months! I used to complain a lot! I'm Italian... I was 90% complaining about my job search and 10% job searching. I wasted so much time getting angry at recruiters, managers, and London. And you know what's funny? Today, as a Finance Career Coach, I listen to my clients complaining 😅 This post is to let you know 3 things about complaining about job hunting: 𝟏. 𝐅𝐎𝐂𝐔𝐒 𝐎𝐍 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐋 OUT OF YOUR CONTROL: New job openings and replies to applications UNDER YOUR CONTROL: New LinkedIn connections and messages sent 𝟐. Are you a #banking or #finance professional hating your job? Then STOP and read this... Can we skip to Friday? When I was #burningout, I would wish my week away every Monday. What a waste, I know! I was at a FTSE 50 in corporate finance in London. I thought I had it all. Instead, my job made me miserable. How could I tell I was burning out? 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀: (1) Toxic environment with mean boss and colleagues (2) Overwhelmed with work I was not trained for (3) Imposter syndrome - I had to work harder than others 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: In this video, I share the first-aid kit to use when you are burning out. The hiring process for #Finance and #Banking roles is wrong! It's such a big waste of time! Hiring managers worry that they won't find the right candidate. They put you through several interviews. They ask for impressive CVs and cover letters. And don't forget to have an outstanding LinkedIn profile, qualifications, work experience in the same role, and [long list of things you don't have]!! But what do they do to prepare for an interview with you? Close to nothing. Think about it. How often have you heard of a new joiner fired for not being good enough? How often have you heard of a hiring manager not being good enough? Seriously, don't get me started. The bottom line is that hiring managers should prepare to be interviewed by candidates and be afraid of not being good enough! Stop thinking that you or your experience is not good enough!

Let's stop pretending that #investmentbanking is for everyone! The acceptance ratio is 2%. For Harvard, it's 5%, and for Oxford 17.5%! If you studied #finance, you have thought about "breaking into IB." You probably looked it up online and realized how tough it is to get into it. However, given the astronomical salaries and lofty lifestyle, you thought it was still worth a shot. Fair enough! The next phase is when 100 applications later, you start feeling depressed because you received 0 interviews! Or you made it to 1 but didn't get the offer. Daily, I receive messages from aspiring bankers with no credentials to get a job in IB who are just wasting their time! They had been promised by online "coaches," courses, or unreliable websites that they could break into IB if they only worked hard enough. This is NOT true! Investment banking is the most elite career you can pursue in Finance. It's easier to get into Harvard or Oxford than JPM! To get a fair chance of even being considered for IB, you need the following: 1. Tier 1 business school 2. High GPA 3. Relevant internships 4. Extra-curricular activities showing your leadership potential If you already have work experience, it needs to be top-notch. Don't even bother if you didn't work at other IBs, Big 4, private equity, asset management, boutiques, or FTSE 50 corporations. Online, ex-bankers tell you they made it despite coming from a non-target school with a low GPA. If the probability of getting into IB is 2%, what's the likelihood of getting in if you don't even tick all the boxes? I advise diversifying your target roles and including less selective alternatives where you have a shot! Believe it or not, IB is not the only career in #Finance.

#Banking and #Finance professionals, would you like to know if a company is toxic before you accept an offer? Here is how. Most of the finance professionals I worked with asked me this question repeatedly. They argued that it's impossible to tell what the company culture is like before you join. I disagree! These are the 7 guidelines to follow to tell if a company is toxic before you join: 𝟏. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠. If the hiring manager has nothing to hide, their team will feel comfortable chatting with you. It might be a red flag if they never reply to your messages. 𝟐. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞? Toxic companies look for culprits who must be isolated and blamed. By asking this question, you can double-check what it would look like to be a fallible human at that company. 𝟑. 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲'𝐬 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐬. During interviews, toxic hiring managers try to paint a rosy picture. Authentic hiring managers will also openly share the company's flaws. 𝟒. 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬. Once you get the offer, you can still walk away! Do your due diligence by asking probing questions now that your bargaining power is higher. 𝟓. 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠. If you were interviewing your hiring manager, what impression would you have? You are literally hiring the person who will make or break your career at that company. Choose carefully! 𝟔. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥? If you are open to listening, your gut will share all the necessary information. Which word best describes your mental and physical state when you left the meeting? 𝟕. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐲. If the process was clunky, slow, and a one-way conversation, you can expect the same to happen when you start working for your next boss. Take your time when making your decision to switch jobs. You might regret it a few weeks into your new role!

#Banking and #Finance professionals, have you realized you are in the wrong job? When we change jobs, we get excited. We tell everybody and patiently wait for our notice period to be over so we can finally live the dream. Then we start...and well, it's OK. We realize the new work environment will not give us what we hoped for! Argh! That's frustrating— after all those months of job hunting, CV crafting, and interviewing for nothing. It happened to me as well. I had been superficial in my due diligence of the work environment, projects, and career opportunities. I could only blame myself. Ouch! That hurt. This is what I learned from my mistakes: 𝟏. 𝐈𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦. So instead of blaming others, I need to reflect more on what I truly want. 𝟐. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐭, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐮𝐬. We chase money and status, but they can't motivate us forever! 𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐣𝐨𝐛. Please start searching as soon as possible, and it's OK to leave before one year. 𝟒. 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: "𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬?" Be honest and mention why you are sure that the next job is the right one. A LinkedIn recommendation from former colleagues could go a long way! 𝟓. 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐲. Staying in the wrong job can only harm your mental health and career. There is no gain in staying. Need a way out? Are you a #Banking or #Finance professional wearing a mask at work every day? I did for 10 years in my career in Finance in London. It was unbearable! You pretend that it's enough, that you care about your projects, and you drag yourself through your career just for another year. Right? I did it, too. It was painful to live someone else's life for 10 years! I put my mask on every Monday morning, hoping it will hold until Friday afternoon. I wasn't always lucky! Eventually, the mask cracked under pressure. It was the best day of my life! I realized that my ego was obsessed with earning a high salary and success, but the real me was dying. I had no passions, interests, or life outside of work. A decade later, what we want at 18 can be significantly different. Starting a new career path was like breathing for the first time after holding my breath for 10 years!
